Today was the first chance I've had to use my 100-400L IS since it was repaired by Canon and it seems to be front focusing quite a bit :(

Still, I managed to get some not bad photos of a friendly Robin.

Very nice shots of a beautiful little bird. Makes me wish they had been introduced in North America instead of European Starlings........

Thanks folks :)

The IS unit in the lens failed - I kept getting error 99, 00, and lock ups with IS switched on. I sent it to Canon CPS for repair, i'll do some more focus tests tomorrow to check for sure though.

Great shots all. Sorry to hear about the problems with your 100-400. I thought for a while that mine had a similar fault but now think it's more to do with the focusing points on the 20D. Do you have all 9 points activated or just use the centre point? As DOF in so narrow zoomed out at 400 and close range, especialy wide open, I found that letting the camera select the focus point sometimes left the critical area out of focus. I get far less front focusing problems selecting the focus point manualy. Incidentally, I too sometimes get the errors and lockups you describe. It seems to happen when the IS is on and I point the lens to (but not directly at) a very bright light source, such as a setting sun.

These are a hell of lot better than "not bad". For my money these are just perfect. Thanks for sharing.
