Hi,
I am seeking any advice possible about creating a portfolio... I am applying for a degree in photography and whilst not needing any art foundation background I do need to attend an interview and take with me a portfolio of photographic work. I have never had to do anything like this before so ANY tips / advice would be great. Should I show 1 style etc? I have only seriously taken pictures over the course of the last year and have much to learn- hence wanting to extend my passion of photography into taking a degree in it. Size of some of my pictures may be a small problem as many of my pictures were taken on a compact 3.2mp camera, although others were taken on a 35mm film SLR.
I have a website of some pictures taken whilst travelling (they were not all taken as general 'holiday snaps'..) so if anybody has any recommendations etc... the site is: http://wazza.nfscity.com/world

Like i said before, ANY help will be appreciated...
Cheers,
Adam

You should've asked this question about 6 months ago.

I'd contact them, and ask what it is they are looking for you to demonstrate on the interview and in your portfolio.

Then build around that with the time you have.

I realise that, the problem is that 6 months ago I was in Thailand, travelling before starting my History degree. I've realised that im not too sure about whether I want to stay on my course and so am going for an interview at a neighbouring university for photography, its not a 'pass or fail' interview, but it will allow me to see what my options are. Its not the end of the world if it doesn't work out. I was just looking for advice. Cheers for your advice, I did that a few days ago- need to get back to university tommorow and sort out my pictures now!

Should I show 1 style etc? How many styles do you have? If 10, I'd show THE BEST shot from each. If 2, then maybe show 3-4 "Wow" shots. "Less is more" & I wouldn't show more than 12-15 total. Make them want to see more, rather than tire them out with quantity.
If you have a 2nd interview with the same person, I'd take a few new shots, too.

I wouldn't worry about the quality of a 3.2MP - from this camera you will probably have shots that's show great composition and an 'eye' for it. If so, include them.

Raw talent in the form of a good natural eye for composition is what they need as the RAW input to the course I guess - and is the hardest thing for them to teach.

And if you can, can you provide a range of techniques: landscape, macro, people portraits, night, black & white etc. Don't worry about covering all of them, but a few different styles would have more impact thatn 15 andscapes, or 15 night shots etc.

Size of some of my pictures may be a small problem as many of my pictures were taken on a compact 3.2mp camera,

Hey,
Cheers for all the replies, got my self a folder today to use for the portfolio. Think im going to get all my chosen pictures printed in 8*6 or 8*10 over the next few days. I won't worry about picture quality as suggested.
Thanks again,
Adam
