Following the success of the kiwi's get together, anyone in London fancy meeting up one day during Nov/Dec 2005 for a shoot?

My theme is travel so anything goes: cityscapes, buildings, markets, people, parks etc. And recently I've done a lot of low light photography and B&W conversions.

I'd be particularly interested if anyone has access to buildings with good vantage points (i.e. offices with raised views of landmarks).

It would be good to share access, tips, skills..an just do some shooting and a few beers.

As a taster, here's some I did recently...Westminster, Tower Bridge & St. Pauls

Yeah, I'd be up for a photoshoot. Landscapes are really my thing but there aren't many opportunites in london, so I'm working on cityscapes and architecture instead. Loved your photo of St Pauls by the way :)

Ok so that looks like 4 so far: Me,Timm, Big-B, Tlee05.

The weekend dates I could do between now and Xmas are:

weekend of 26-27 Nov
weekend of 10-11 Dec

Shall we try to pick 1 of those 4 days?

OK. Let's make it the weekend of Sat 10th or Sun 11th December.

Now...any views on where to go, what to shoot? that may help dictate whether we go for Sat or Sun. Some suggestions:

1. Walk along Southbank from Tower Bridge to Lambeth Bridge - that would take in Tower Bridge, mayors office, Southbank, across to St Paul's, London Eye, across to Westminster.

2. Covent Garden

3. Hyde park

So get the suggestions coming. Sat or Sun? Places to visit?

p.s. that weekend sunrise 07.55, sunset is 15.51...plenty of pub time in the evening :D

Sounds good. Saturday is better for me but I can manage either. Given a choice, I'd rather avoid westminster/london eye as I work round there so I have plenty of photos of the area.

Other suggestions:

1. Starting on the south-bank somewhere and and working our way past london bridge, towards the docklands. I don't know the area that well, but there seem to be some good views of the City and some old warehouses. Might be difficult for drinks afterwards though.

2. We could go straight to the City/Canary warf.

Same for me I work near SouthBank, just suggesting what I knew to get the ball rolling.

Yes I've never shot down docklands area and would prefer that too. Anyone else?

I'd like to come along but I can't really commit to dates until closer to the time so I'll leave it to you guys set that. Whatever date you finally decide on can you please edit the opening post with a date, time and place for meeting. A list of inners would be usefull just for the sake of keeping track of people up to and on the day. Anyway I'll be able to let you know closer to the date.

I can't make amendments to the first post in this thread anymore.

I now will only be going myself on Saturday 10th Dec - meet up 13.00 somewhere around the docklands/canary wharf area. Have a go at shooting in & around the skyscrapers of canary wharf area first - then head across the river and find location for sunset cityscape shots across the river to Dome and canary wharf, staying after dusk for twilight shots. I haven't done any shots around those areas before, so really looking forward to it. As well as meeting others and sharing the experience, learning from each other and generally misbehavin. Probably shoot till 17.00 - then beer/meal if anyone is up for it.

I won't be going on Sunday, but some people should go if there's enough interest. fingers crossed for some good weather.

Anyone welcome. This is just a get together of like minded people to have a bit of company photographing for an afternoon, doesn't matter whether you have been taking pictures for 1 day or a lifetime, have a point an shoot or large format camera. I'm sure we'll all learn at least something from each other as well as having a good time.

Meet time 12 noon, Canary Wharf tube station, Sat 10 Dec. We'll wander around the buildings of Canary Wharf for a bit - then head across the river to find a spot for shooting the dome from across the river at sunset and into the night. Sunset at 10 to 4, so we should be all done by about 5pm - then beer/meal if anyone is up for it. I've not been around that area, so I'll be as lost as anoybody else, but it should be fun.

Ah, arse, if this had been next weekend I could have tagged along [trains arent running to well on WAGN lines due to engineering and a two hour bus trip doesnt appeal...]

I will keep any eye out for the next one....I'm itching to get some snaps of Tower Bridge and The Gherkin/Lloyds Building and particularly canary wharf as I havent even seen it yet.

Some snaps of the OXO tower would be good to snigger at [take someone up the OXO tower - *snigger*], but the view along embankment in the evening is pretty...well, pretty anyway...Millenium Wheel, OXO Tower, Big Ben, Houses of parliament - I'm sure with the right vantage point you could get all within one shot...;)

I'll be out of the country between 25 Jan and 13 Feb. Can't really do any weekends in January, so it'll be February for next weekend meet for me.

I could however fit in weekday evenings during Jan. Sunset is 16.02 at start of Jan going back to 16.48 by the end of the month. So perhaps if we left met up at 15.00 one day shooting until about 17.30 - then of course beers. Let's say during week commencing Monday 9 Jan. Anyone interested PM me which days you could do that week.

I'd be interested in meeting up - only found this thread after the 1st event had happened. :( Interestingly though I was in London on that Saturday taking photos from the south of the Thames around the Dome (from about 3.45pm) then I walked down to Greenwich and caught the tube into Docklands for around 5pm. Anyway, this is the thread where'll we'll plan the second meet. Feel free to throw up any suggestions you have. The timings worked well for the last one - the last 4 hours up to sunset plus 1 hour afterwards. Looking forward to seeing you at No 2

Idon't think I could really justify an afternoon off work until towards the end of Jan [had a few days off this month ] but I'm up for one of these.

As an aside I was up at Archway [as in about 100ft down Archway Road from the Archway itself] and there is a spot just down from the footpath entrance where you can get a nice chunk of Aldgate/City skyline framed by the local buildings.

Just in case anyone happens to pass through there and wants to try a snap if the air is clear enough [Ha!] then you want to be off the end of Despard Road/Laxton Avenue where it joins Archway Road, and about twetny feet down you are clear of the road signs that otherwise block your view.

Map here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Archway+Road,+Islington,+Greater+London,+N1 9&spn=0.003218,0.010274&iwloc=A&hl=en) but the pointer is in teh wrong place - you can see Despard/Laxton just above that.

I discovered this while installing some machines for the Lambo day centre there, and popped out for a cig and noticed the good elevation/line of sight :)

I've only just moved offices from St James' Park to kensington  typical.

I can pop across any night, I finish about 16:30.

I was also thinking that there could be a good opportunity for some photo's on a Friday night at Chelsea bridge once it gets warmer as loads of bikers meet there, I'm normally seen there on me bike after about 2100 on a Friday (in warmer times)

Just recently I was at South Bank at night and was going to take a few photos of the London Eye, Houses of Parliment etc... when security personnel told me I wasn't allowed to take shots using a tripod. The reason I was given is because it's private property.

It's happen to me a couple of times down there and I've also seen other people told not to use their tripod.

Big_B

Antelope - as you say a lot of the area round there is privately owned, and they can be pretty strict about the use of the tripod. It's happened to me a few times so I know how irritating it can be.

Gordon - I think the 13th should be ok, but I'll have to check my diary on monday.

red_fan

Not the first time I have heard of this happening, but I seem to have been lucky when I have been around that area with my tripod. If it did, I'm not sure how I would respond - possibly question which bits were (their) private property and get them to show me where it says tripod photography isnt allowed. If you are not causing an obstruction then I dont see what the problem is. Then I would take out my beanbag and use that. :-)

Cant make a lunchtime meet - couldnt make it there and back from Walton-on-Thames :-) - but could if it was all afternoon. I'm also up for any weekend.

It can happen; I really don't see what the problem with tripods is in an outdoor location, but on private property, whatever the owners or their representatives says goes.

The bigger irony about it is that I take up far more space than a tripod does, being a power chair user. On the London Eye itself, you aren't allowed any form of tripod or monopod - I deliberately didn't have my tripod with me, though I do have a (fairly crummy) monopod attached to my camera bag. I was quite happy to hand that in for safe keeping - I had no intention of using it when on the Eye.

I have no idea whether or not the security people would have recognised my Gitzo Explorer slung over the back of the wheelchair in its bag, but I wasn't going to take the risk of leaving nearly £400 worth of tripod, head, padded tripod bag and quick release bits and pieces with security. It would have been useless on the Eye anyway - you're limited as to what you can take whilst on the Eye by the curved surfaces of the pods (they do impart sometimes quite severe distortion into your images).

It would be lovely if I could find a way of fixing a camera to my wheelchair, but the Manfrotto Variable Friction Arm really isn't up to supporting a 20D, BG-E2 grip and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and I can't find a beefier equivalent.

It's a shame that the mid-week meet for this week isn't Wednesday; I will be in Central London (well, the National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square WC1) on Wednesday, and will probably be free by lunchtime. There again, being a power chair user, which severely limits my public transport options, makes keeping up with a group of people moving quickly quite awkward, and I'd be scared of slowing everyone else down.

I've done the whole South Bank thing a couple of times now - has anyone got any suggestions for other places to try? It sounds like Docklands is worth a go, if I can figure out the parking. I'm forced to drive to London; the trains from where I live aren't accessible, though I suppose, if I'm feeling brave, leaving the car in Queen Square and heading onwards by bus is possible. I've yet to try the newish wheelchair accessible buses, though, before I was ill, when I lived in Central London, I used to use the buses to get around everywhere.

Another possibility, I suppose, is to park in the South Bank area (I know where to park there), and take the Jubilee Line.

Who else is up for Sunday 26th Feb? All afternoon from 12 noon till about 5.30 - then a beer or two? I'm happy to go anywhere.

Plus I'll be doing a short 1.5hr thing fri 13th, London Eye if anyone is central and wants to join me.
Hi Gordon, the 26th would suit me. . .

So to summarise - we're looking at a lunchtime meet on Wednesday 25th January, or a Sunday afternoon meet on Sunday 26th February.

David I wouldn't worry about slowing people down - the whole point of a get together is to slowly meander round, looking for shots - it wouldn't bother me how slow our progress is, and I'm sure other people wouldn't mind as well!

Sunday 26th sounds good to me.

Another option is to go upstream to Battersea with the power station and park, as well as the Thames bridges.

That's a shame Mike - still, hopefully we'll start to make these a little more regular - so if we meet again in late March or April, the sun will be shining, and we'll be taking photos of birds, and flowers, and nice spring type things :)

Clive - nothing yet, but it's a good idea to start thinking now - how about we meet up at 3pm? That gives us a good 2.5 hours of light - can then think about low light - then on to a pub, then if people want, take some night time piccies - if we're allowed to use a tripod.

Any ideas on what area we should start off in?

I've been useless at getting out and about and on the shutter over the past couple of months, so I'm gonna say 99.9% that there's another attendee for the 26th (the other .1% is reserved for possibly moving house).

Are the freerunners/skaters still out and about at the south bank centre at that time of day? 8 or 9 folks turning up brandishing big cameras might put them off slightly though

goatee

flashmat2 - I like your blog - some of the images seem to lack a bit of contrast (e.g. the leaves), but some are fantastic - I like the knifeman in covent garden the best, along with some of your shots of the City where it borders the surrounding areas.

Anyway, back to the meet - if they are still around, then I'm sure some of them would be more than happy to get free shots taken of them - e.g. I'd be happy to email them free copies of any shots I took. Otherwise, I don't know what time Camden market runs until - that's particularly colourful - and plenty of interesting faces to shoot. Any other suggestions?

flashmat2

Just been browsing my London street atlas, and whilst not knowing how energetic everyone else is feeling, how does the following sound:

Tate modern, under millenium bridge
over millenium bridge and up to St Pauls
down to Bank
over to the gherkin, past tower 42
down to lloyds
past fenchurch st station to the tower of london/london bridge
back along thames path, past city hall/HMS Belfast
left at london bridge station, past borough market to The George for (by this time) welcome refreshments

It's not a massively long walk, plenty of contrasting photo opportunities, and has plenty of scope for shortcuts/chopping bits off depending on time/available light - eg from lloyds straight down to london bridge, passing the monument, etc.

Does anyone know of a pub local to the meet that will be showing the Liverpool vs Man City game at lunch time?
