There are lots of (re-saved) full size originals on http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/canond30_samples1/ but remember that they need sharpening etc - they are untouched.

thanks for the reply

one last question:
since files are 20x30 at 72dpi...what program do people use to resample the pics? I use PS and was wondering if there might be a better alternative?

photo shop is great, but you don't want to resample when you decrease the print size

Use resize in Photoshop and simply change to 6"X4" at 360dpi.

This is perfect for making high quality prints on 6"X4" photo paper and you lose no information.

I use Genuine Fractals to Rez Up the photo. I save the 6X4 by 360dpi into Genuine Fractals and then open/size up to 10X15 by 360dpi and crop to 8X10 by 360dpi and then print. It makes super 8X10 prints.

prints up to 30x40 so far have been printed and look as good as my 6x7 medium format neg prints.

Roy,

I just viewed the samples you posted on Pekkas
site and they knocked my socks off. They are the
portraits of the girl and boy with the d30. How did
you prep and size them? I noticed the image size as
being 8x10 at 180...yet they look so good and noiseless
at 100% in photoshop. Could you elaborate?

I dont have a D30 yet. Just plans on getting one. Had some experience with a Kodak 620x freelancing for a local paper. So here’s a hard learned fact:

Make every pixel count. I found the following trick (a variation from Noel Carboni´s technique) maximizes sharpness and minimizes pixelation in a 13 x19 print. This is what worked for my Epson 1280:

Upsample (resample on) the 1440 pixel wide D30 original file to 6000 pixel wide. Apply Gaussian Blur Radius 2 and USM amount 300/radius 2/ threshold 0.

Then downsample (resample on) to 3000 pixel width. Apply USM again, this time around 150/1/4 and resize image (resample off) to a resolution of 240 ppi. The result is a very clean and sharp looking 12.5 x 18.75 print at 240 dpi.

The following image shows 200% enlargements of the just mentioned technique. The original image and copyright belong to Phil Askey and was downloaded from his D30 image gallery. (Thank you Mr Askey). Look at the pixelation around the heads and the apparent sharpness in the bridge’s decoration.

The one on the LEFT uses the upsample/downsample technique just mentioned. The one on the RIGHT is straight bicubic interpolation from 8,9 meg to 38.7 meg Tiffs. The image on the extreme right is Phil’s uncropped D30 file, just to provide a visual reference of how much enlargement we are talking about (look for the couple under the bridge arch).

I think a sharp (medium f stop + prime or L lens), noise free ( ISO 100 + raw + well exposed) D30 shot properly interpolated CAN handle detailed landscape and large group portraiture.

If someone knows better please let me know. I'd love to see other technique applied to this image, available from the D30 image gallery at dpreview.com.

Thanks a lot, Jorge Alban.

http://photography-on-the.net/D30/stuff/CRW_0902_00001.jpg is a D30 photo called "Traveler" I took a week ago. It was part of a D30's quality discussion in a finnish newsgroup, that's why it's there and "copyrighted". Canon 50mm f/1.4, 2x550EX under ST-E2, ISO 100. It's been LinearSharpened, nothing else. That's one of photos I'll put into my gallery soon.

Not sure if this is to me, I assume it is?
I'm "Ron" but people often call me Roy because of
my user name rojoy (which is my corporation name which I picked by combining my name Ron and my wife's name Joy.

Not sure what portrait you mean, do you mean the one of the sister and brother outdoors? (she's in a white dress)? Or do you mean the 2 kids by the piano?
Not sure what you mean by prep and size?
I downsize for web display (usually down about 50% or smaller) I often then usm a bit.)

Image size (8x10 x 180?) dpi and size in inches is totally meaningless all that matters in print image quality is "filesize". monitors only display at about 72dpi, so saying it's 8x10 x 180dpi doesn't mean anything as you're still viewing a 72 dpi image. (95% of the people in digital forums are totally clueless when it comes to dpi/image size/ filesize and print quality). There is nothing in the file that sets the dpi or the size in inches. All that matters is the amount of image data. The more data the better and more detailed the image (and the larger the file size). A 50mb image file will print a better 11x14 than a 10mb image file. Looking at both images on the screen will display them both at 72dpi, but the 50 meg file version will be larger, because it's comprised of more pixels.

Noiseless image... is attributed to the D30. It really can't be beat in that department.

thanks for the comments, I hope I answered your question(s)?

Ron

Ron,

How did you print the 30X40 images? My local supplier cannot print that large and told me he cannot find anyone who can.

Thanks,
Ken

Ron,

Thanks for the reply. I was specifically talking about
the beautiful blonde lady shot with her hand propped
under her cheek. I would really like to know how you
handle the files once you acquire them to produce large
prints..in a step by step process, including interpolation,
sharpness, color correction, etc. I was impressed with
the fact that I saw no pixelization in your sample even
at 200%. Also, her hair look so natural, I could swear
it was not a digitally acquired image.
