I was using the Canon 70-200L, f2.8, with the 2x extender.

Excellent captures. I can see the red shaft by the tail on the second shot. Other than that they appear to be identical to the Yellow Shafted Flicker ( Northern Flicker) here in the East ( in the summer that is). I think I like the first shot for the detail, light color and bokeh but the other shot comes in a close second because of the red shaft. If not for that I would have bet my house it was a Yellow Shafted Flicker. Interesting to hear they go for suet like the rest of the woodpecker family. Thanks!

That is some of the best that I have seen of that bird this summer. Nicely done.

Wow, these are fantastic. That first shot has excellent detail and sharpness, great considering you were using a 2x Tcon. A dang stunning bird also, very attractive.

Perfect shots, especially that first one!!! Excellent detail of that beautiful bird. Looks like it's in its natural element.

Very nice shots! I think you've got a hybrid between a Red-Shafted and Yellow-Shafted, which is apparently rather common for you westerners. The Red-Shafted in its pure form has a grey face, a tan crown and a red "mustache". This one here has all the facial characteristics of a Yellow-shafted, but with the red shafts.

Sharp, colour and capture is all excellent.
Now who has been saying that the 70-200 image quality deteriorates significantly with the 2xTC ?;)
Digididit, you might have just nudged me in the direction of getting a 2xTC for my 200 mm prime for an ultimate ultra compact birding lens.
