Noticed on http://lightroomkillertips.com/ that there is an ad stating "Something Special is Coming Jan 10 @ NAPP". If you hover your mouse over it, the tool tip says "lr4 beta teaser - 300 x 250". They probably didn't mean to give it away, but seems pretty reliable.

Don't even need the tooltip to guess that on a site called "lightroomkillertips.com"

Nice catch.
Things I'd like to see in LR4:
1. Book layouts. I absolutely hate having to maintain a copy of Aperture just to use its book feature. Give us the ability to lay out multi-page book spreads and export as PDF, and I'd be thrilled. Perhaps a partnership with one of the online photo book companies, too, to facilitate one-click printing a la Apple.
2. Layers. This one won't happen, since it would cannibalize sales of Photoshop, but it would be oh so nice to have the ability to make adjustments in layers, with proper masking.
3. Ability to invert, copy, and paste adjustment brushes. I often find myself using local adjustment brushes to do one thing (increasing local sharpness or brightness, for instance), and then wanting to make the reciprocal adjustment to the rest of the photo. This currently requires me to create an entirely new adjustment brush and paint in the changes. But what if I could simply copy the mask created by the first brush, paste it to the second brush, invert it, and then simply dial in my settings. This would streamline things greatly for me.

Sweet. I'd simply like to be able to export directly into an existing catalogue!

It would probably be a lame excuse to increase the price

I think they could add layers if they do not add too much other layer functions you may see in CS5 and Elements. It would be a great way to utilize all the functions that LR3 offers. Additional features to the adjustment brush would be great. I don't see them adding RGB curves for some reason, but it would be nice. I can't think right now, but should be interesting if it does come out soon...Not sure if I would buy the upgrade though since I bought CS5...

Take a look at "Perfect Layers" from OnOneSoftware. It's not a bad plug-in for LR. :)

is it slow? or make LR more slow should I say? LR3 has some nice features but damn it's so slow compared to 2 something, which ever was the one before.

As far as LR3 goes, it's not slow for me even with the plug-in.. My rig specs are i7 965 with 24 GB of RAM.

for whatever reason though, my ram isn't the issue it seems it's always the CPU that goes crazy, which I don't completely understand :o The apple "genius" recommended I switch to iphoto, I tried not to giggle

Can I get a Hell Yeah, you know nothing flashy, just so that when I'm editing two distinct colour temperatures I can set the two, layer and blend them into one.

Good example.
This could also be accomplished by simply allowing us to copy, invert, and paste a local adjustment brush mask. Then you could set the colour temperature for the first brush to daylight (for instance), and the second brush to something else, without having to paint in regions for both temperatures.

Forgot about that. Good one.
I think this is a likely addition, since RGB curves are already in Aperture.

Quad Core (2.2GHz i7 MacBook Pro) provided me with an enormous jump in LR performance vs my old C2D MacBook Pro, as did moving to 8GB of RAM. I'm curious as to what benefits would be gained by moving to 16GB. The benchmarks I've seen suggest that the RAM bottleneck is mostly solved by going to 8GB, and that RAM is no longer the limiting factor beyond that.

RGB curves are not a dealbreaker for me, and certainly not enough to drive me to Aperture, which I've never gotten my head around.

There's no real advantage after that. If you're running a bunch of apps/multitasking at the same time then you will see the advatage of having more ram. I do this quite often. So, the extra ram is utilized. :)

I'd like the Adjustment Brush to do localised versions of all the other Lightroom editing functions. For example, tonight I was working on a pair of slightly bloodshot eyes. I had to go into Photoshop (Elements in my case) to do the job. I'd like to paint in a selection on which I could adjust saturation of reds. Or add a dual-tone effect. Or change the white balance. Or add a local gradient. Probably a lot too much to ask...

Gary, take a look at the NIK Software's plugins for Lightroom. Particularly, Viveza 2 and Color Efex Pro 4.

and a clone tool would be great to. If they ever got it to layer and mask, you might not need photoshop.

As opposed to the spot removal tool in Clone mode? What would be different?

Found a work around of creating a low saturation brush of the color I want the skin to be and it worked fairly well, but would rather be able to reduce specific color values with adjustment brushes.
We'll see what's planned for LR4 starting Tuesday.

yes I'm jumping ship soon enough, from Mac to PC - I just threw out all of my "I" products and FCP, Garageband, Aperture et al and installed adobe - I gained 109 gb of space on my macbook!!! that like 2-3 jobs on the road worth of space!!! just going to have to find a nice spec laptop - the problem is there are too many to choose from, with apple that was always easy - there is only one model and you decide the screen... :P

Well, my "books" wish came true; partnership with Blurb. That should allow me to dump Aperture completely, which is nice. Expanded adjustment brushes are also a nice feature.
On the other hand, there's no mention of layers, copying of adjustment brush masks, or RGB curves, which is unfortunate, and means I'll still be tied to Photoshop.
I'll have to take this for a spin.
EDIT: Apparently RGB curves are in there.

I'm liking the Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks control. tbh, it is better than the Recovery, Fill Light and Blacks where each of them start to the left of the slider. In LR4 it starts in the middle which is much better
The only thing I think is unnecessary is the Map module

The more granular adjustments to highlights and shadows have me salivating. No more collateral damage in the midtones when adjusting highlights or shadows. The localized WB and noise reduction is pretty sweet too. Video editing is a welcome bonus. Now I don't need to buy another tool just to make minor video adjustments and edits.

Having used the beta for a couple of days now, I can see that LR4 is going to be a great update. However, it's going to take me quite a while to get used to the new controls, and to be able to replicate my PP style from LR3 in LR4.
