My .avi's from my powershot S30 don't play in Media Player 9.
I get audio, and a green screen, that's it.
Does anyone know if I need to download a codec or something?
Thanks,
Han

I have no problem using Media Player 9.0 in XP Home. Have you downloaded all the updates from windows? I seem to recall downloading some DX9 kind of updates.

My PC platform is Windows 2000. I need Media Player 9 & DX 9 together to watch any movie clips.

The S30 compresses the video to MJPEG. You need a decompressor to view the video. QT includes one but there are better choices. One would be to install ffdshow:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&release_id=161224
(choose the latest "ffdshow-alpha" file, currently ffdshow-20030523.exe) This will allow you to play videos with various codecs (ie DivX, Xvid, MPEG1, MPEG2, MJPEG)
By default MJPEG is not decoded so you'll have to enable it.
Once you've installed ffdshow, choose ffdshow>Configuration from the start menu. Select "codecs" and select the "MJPEG" option.

Actually WMP9 is not even required to play WMP9 encoded videos. Only the WMP9 codecs are required. Many people use alternatives to Windows Media Player such as Media Player Classic (http://www.gabest.org/mpc.php) or ZoomPlayer (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml). These players use a fraction of the resources that Windows Media Player uses (especially WMP9). And coupled with ffdshow, these alternative players can make movies that were previously unwatchable on low-end machines watchable due to a better use of system rsources (memory, CPU, etc).
