Convert to lab mode

Hi all,
I have heard many times about converting to lab mode from PS but do not know how to do that. Can someone tell me how to do that? What is the advantage of process in lab mode compare to other?

I use Lab mode when sharpening - Lab mode separates color information from lightness information, so when you sharpen only the 'colorless' component you don't make color noise worse.

In PS 6.01:

Menu: [image/mode/Lab Color]

Then in channels palette you can choose the lightness channel and sharpen that. Then convert back to RBG if needed.
