Some more information may be helpful.
What kind of camera are you using?
Are you connecting to a USB port or hub? Sometimes the hubs act funky.
Did you download the new XP driver from Canon's website if this is a new installation or computer, or have you been able to connect previously?
Just to pass along my own recent experience. I purchased a new XP computer & went through hell trying to get my G-1 connected. Zoombrowser & Elements would display thumbnails, however when I tried to download, I couldn't connect. After trying everything, I finally realized that I shoot in RAW & had forgotten to install the Canon File Utility Viewer software. Once I did that, voila. It's perfect.
A whole week shot and much cursing for my mind's vapor lock.
Good luck

1. Turn on your camera in the playback mode.
2. Go to Device Manager
3. Click the + next to either Imaging Devices or Other Devices to open it.
4. Right click on Powershot S110 and select "Update Driver"
5. Click Next on the Update Driver Wizard.
This should fix it.
