View Full Version : 10D download using Canon ZoomBrowse VERY slow

I've just started with my new 10D. Downloading pictures with the Canon ZoomBrowser software is VERY slow. 100 pictures of SmallFine quality takes 30 minutes.
I've got a P4 3.04GHz processor with 1GB RAM and SCSI 320 hard drive. So no one has a faster computer (I'm a professional computer programmer).
Previously I have been able to download with the same software from a PowerShot S230 at the rate of 10-20 pictures/minute.
I can download using the WindowsXP [Cameras/Scanners] GetPictures function each picture taking 1-2 seconds.
Any ideas what's up with the ZoomBrowser download speed being so bad?

Do you download with the camera? I reckon it might be quicker if you use a card reader and BreezeBrowzer. Having said that, I use a really cheap USB card reader and it isn't exactly zippy.

gordeaux, not sure what being a "professional computer programmer" has to do with owning a 3.04Ghz rig w/SCSI. Now if you'd have said you were a hardcore gamer, now that would be a bit more reasonable ;). BTW, did you mean a 3.06 Ghz, or have you overclocked a 2.8C to 3.04?
-Regardless, something's configured improperly for your Direct from Camera ZoomBrowser transfers to take as long as you state (30 minutes to xfer 100 small/fine .jpegs). Compared to using a Reader, Direct from Camera would take quite a bit longer but the times you mention indicate a more significant issue. Are your Virus Protection settings set too aggressively?
*I performed a test of 100 small/fine .jpeg's (image size approx 249kb each) from my 10D and ZB transferring all images in 1min 14sec.
**A Test of the same 100 images via USB 2.0 Reader and ZB =

10D uses USB 1.1, so it's slow, despite the PC power you have (a 386 will do the same job....!)
However, I have not noticed difference (or significant) using the Canon software or XP browser.

I'm not a professional computer programmer. Poor guy. :-) I'm a teacher by profession and currently at-home Mommy of 2 girls. So I take TONS of pictures with our Powershot S230- needless to say I'm thankful for digital photography. My photos used to download really quickly-in several seconds to a few minutes. Now, all of a sudden it's taking a long time - like 30 minutes to download 60 pictures. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a setting I may have accidentally changed to cause this to happen? I have the camera set on the highest resolution and fine compression.

no one has a faster computer? your computer is [at least] 3 years old. *rolls eyes*
P4 duel 4ghz w/ 8gb ram here. and mine's almost 2 years old.
anyway, as for your question, I've never used that. I plug my camera into the computer, and let vista import them right off the camera. it takes about 20 minutes for me to import 10 GB (3000) pictures.

oh, and I've tested downloading with a high speed USB card reader and it's about the same speed ad right out of the camera. but I'd still try it both ways, as you may find one or the other to be faster on your screaming fast computer. :-P
