View Full Version : EF-S Lenses on a 10D?

I'd really like to get an EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM for my 10D, but it obviously won't work due to the EF-S series lenses only working on Rebel and 20D bodies. Is there an adapter of some sort to make the EF-S lenses fit on a 10D? What other options should I consider for a wide lens? (~10mm) Thanks in advance.

There is no 'offical' way of fitting the EF-S lenses to a 10D.
the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens has been modified to fit - I have done one myself - and the way to do it is well documented (search the forum or on Google).
To my knowledge no-one has admitted to taking a hacksaw to any of the other EF-S lenses - but I am willing to be told otherwise;own up all you 10-22mm users who have put this lens under the saw!
Given the cost of the 10-22mm, 60mm Macro and 17-85mm IS there doesn't seem much enthusiasm; especially as the 10D is replaced with the 20D which does take EF-S without surgery.

As to the alternatives you will have to look to other lens manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina to get a shorter zoom than the 16-35/2.8L Canon

What other options do I have for a wide angle other than the Canon 10-22? I looked into the Sigma 12-24, and it seems it doesn't have the same quality as the Canon.

Would a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM, or maybe even a 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM, be the next best thing for shooting wide angles with a 10D?

The Sigma, and the Tokina 12-24, APS-C lenses will work fine unaltered on the 10D. Also, when considering the Sigma 12-24 (which several people here like very much), remember that it will cover a full-frame sensor, not just the APS-C of the 10D.

Meaning I can use it on such cameras as the 1D, correct?

Am I correct in assuming that the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens will not fit on a 10D?

Also correct.

Even with the mechanical hack I doubt the 10-22 would work on a 10D due to the potrusion of the rear lens element into the mirror box at the widest setting. It's certainly not something I'd want to try.

Personally, I've stayed away from the EF-S lenses due to their limited compatibility with Canon bodies. I've read good reviews from others, but I just can't bring myself to buy a lens that won't fit on all my bodies. I do have the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens that came with the 20D, but I haven't used it once and I'd give it away in a heartbeat if a friend wanted it.

Correct.

Also correct.

You are indeed correct, and the EFS 18-55mm is the only one I would consider modding to fit, as I have. For $65 it was well worth it.

You are indeed correct, and the EF 50mm f/1.8 is the only one I would consider modding to fit, as I have. For $65 it was well worth it.

The EF 50/1.8 should fit to your 10D without any modding at all.
I assume you were referring to the EF-S 18-55.

There are quite some alternatives in the 10-20 mm range ... Sigma, Tamron, Tokina all have similar lenses that will fit on the 10D without modification.

Best regards,
Andy

The Tokina 12-24 f4(if) DX does not work completely with a Canon 5D
At 12-117+ you get a ring frame(?)
At 18-24 full frame

It does work beautifully with a 10D

Would a Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM, or maybe even a 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM, be the next best thing for shooting wide angles with a 10D?

Yes anyone of the 3rd party wide anlge lenses made for APS-C frames should do you fine. The Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 or Tokina 12-24mm f4 would be a good choice. I think Tamron also has a new 11-18mm lens DiII for APS-C frames.

Sigma's full frame 12-24mm would also work for you, but the other above listed lenses would do the job on the 10D for a few hundred less.

I would try one out at a local shop, to be sure it will function on the 10D, if so then you should be good to go.
