Canon A60 installation problems

I purchased the A60 and installed the software on my computer (Windows 98 SE), Everything went fine, except that the last step after you have rebooted and attached the cable to the USB port and the camera. The driver is supposed to automatically install, but nothing happens and when I open the Zoombrowser it says "camera not found". I checked the cameras/scanners tab in Explorer and the camera is there. All the downloaded files appear to be in the Canon folders. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, all to no avail. I have two USB ports, one of which is used by my mouse. I switched back and forth and the mouse runs fine on either port. To see if it was a camera problem, I installed the software on my office laptop, which runs Windows 98 (not SE). It worked fine. So, it would appear to be somehow connected to Windows. I see similar problems have been outlined in posts by others, and I have tried some of the solutions, but have not been successful. I would truly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Yes, did that and everything else exactly as per the manual. I'm thinking something is wrong somewhere in my Windows 98 SE.

I have had a similar problem using win2k, although my camera downloads fine on my desktop PC running win 98SE. See my question regarding win2k and canon s400.

Am tearing my hair out for an answer.

I really hate to state the obvious, but if you're pulling your hair out, why not call Canon Tech Support. It's free.

I have the solution.
See if stimon.exe is running. If not, run it from command promt. If there is no stimon.exe in system directory find it on win98 CD.
