Hello all,
I'm new to sports photography, and most other photography for that matter. I'll probably never sit on the sidelines of a major event, but would love to get some great shots at local high school and jr. high events. I am shooting with the Canon 300D and kit lens. I know the lens is part if not all of my problem. I am saving to get a good lens. I would like to know what you would recommend. I've been looking at the 75-300, but not sure if that is the best for what I want. I would be shooting typical HS events:football, basketball, soccer, baseball/softball, etc. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I want something that works well in all of these situations.

Also I would like tips for camera settings. I've been experimenting with creative modes and trying to avoid auto settings.

Thanks for any and all help. Sorry for long post.

Check out the canon 85mm f/1.8 prime. It will give you the best chance for indoor pictures with no flash. You might need a zoom for outdoors. Check out b&h video online. Also search sports and this lens on this site for more info. I have the canon 300d also and it is pushing it for the iso to go over 800. Good luck.

For someone on a budget, I'd second that recommendation for the 85mm/1.8. It's the lens to have for gym sports. An affordable alternative for outdoor sports would be the 200mm f/2.8L with a 1.4x teleconverter. I have the 85 already and am hoping Santa will bring me the 200! :)

I'd second that too, and it will get you pics at a football game, just wait for the action to come to you.
