Okay, because us TPBM'rs tend to bend the rules in the competition thread, this thread is for us :D
This is for general chat and off TPBM topic items. Enjoy!
Edit 07/14/07: For those who may wander by, stop in and say hello :D We are a friendly, albeit odd, bunch and welcome any and all.

You know what's alarming about the stats for TPBM Chat 45? Chet came back the beginning of January, and he still finished in the Top 20 posters with better than 1% of the posts. Harm (who's been in heavy Monk3y training) finished on top with 10% of all posts.

Hi All, nice digs. :D
Thanks, Jim. I'm getting mixed messages on the exact weight and time. I'm going with what mom says. :D
He still looks quite big for being premature, how much more incubation was expected.
Awwwwwww! Okay not really but I am sure he will turn cute but they freak me out when new. Congratulations!
Yeah, some look all weird, especially if jaundiced for a week or two.

We drove home from Las Vegas yesterday in some of the freakiest weather I've ever seen out here. Leaving there, we were driving into fierce headwinds that knocked us around quite a bit. There was a little rain, but that wasn't a factor. It was the wind that kept me preoccupied the entire trip. There were signs recommending 'high profile vehicles' get off the road, but the truckers just ignored it. Accordingly, some of those big rigs were making quantum changes of lanes when gusts hit them, and passing required equal shares of faith, courage, and luck. AS we got close to home, we found ourselves in brownouts. Blowing sand made it impossible to see the car 50 feet in front. It was worse than any fog I've ever driven in. At some points, we the car in front of us came to a complete stop, and we worried whether the car behind us would stop as well. When we finally got home, we found that many trees in our neighborhood had blown down, and a couple large branches on one of our own trees and snapped. They had to postpone the PGA golf tournament that's in town, and we've been hearing chainsaws all night and morning while emergency crews get trees off houses, etc. Our damage was relatively light; a little pruning, and the tree that lost the branches should be okay. I'm afraid to look at the car, though. I know our windshield is pitted, and I suspect the paint is, too.
The anniversary was very nice. I'm only sorry we'll have to wait another 50 years to do it again. One particular thing that made it memorable we only found out about after the fact. I had noticed an unusually high number of really leggy, tall women in our hotel, and we learned that Chanel had been hosting some sort of event with Victoria Secret models. They were all over the place, and certainly attracted their share of attention.
I looked all around for Crissa and Billy, but I guess we got our signals crossed. I can't remember if they were going to come out here, or if we were supposed to go to New Jersey.
I hope everyone is holding up in these storms. I haven't caught up, but haven't heard of any problems from the Oregonians. Fingers crossed.

A robin, methinks. He posted some robins a few years back, and they are not quite as red-breasted as the ones over here.

The chair rail and crown moulding would be a very nice touch! My walls are mostly cinder block... UGH! I do have a large picture window that is set on a stone wall. It's a very nice office and one of the biggest on campus... so I shall not complain too much! ;)

Hope the Lexus doesn't need a new paint job.
You're a month ahead of our Tucson trip. Invite still stands. We're there next month those dates. I'm sure the camera widows would find things to interest themselves (not least bemoaning our respective Gear Acquisition Syndromes).

Hi Sarge. The waters have gone down some. There's a big storm coming though that is causing more flooding concerns. I'm hoping it's not as bad as predicted. If you saw that post on my fb page you saw how close things were this round.

Yo Z....another true life tale?
It was snowing heavily and blowing to the point that visibility was almost zero when the little Blonde got off work. She made her way to her car and wondered how she was going to make it home. She sat in her car while it warmed up and thought about her situation. She finally remembered her daddy's advice that if she got caught in a blizzard she should wait for a snow-plow to come by and follow it. That way she would not get stuck in a snow drift.
This made her feel much better and sure enough in a little while a snow-plow went by and she started to follow it. As she followed the snow-plow she was feeling very smug as they continued and she was not having any problem with the blizzard conditions.
After an hour had passed, she was somewhat surprised when the snow-plow stopped and the driver got out and came back to her car and signaled for her to roll down her window. The snow-plow driver wanted to know if she was alright as she had been following him for a long time. She said that she was fine and told him of her daddy's advice to follow a snow-plow when caught in a blizzard.
The driver replied that it was OK with him and she could continue if she wanted, but he was done with the Wal-Mart parking lot, and was going over to Sears next.

No, things are pretty quiet now. It was sure ugly here on Saturday, though, and they're still cleaning up the mess. I'm so happy we had our three remaining 'big' trees removed last year. There is no way they would have survived the gale. Neighbor across the street lost two trees (completely uprooted), so we can't complain about our two big branches that snapped.

I like how your steamed milk thing works. Mine is a nozzle to the side. I use a separate container for the milk, steam it and then put it in the coffee. On a side note, can you adjust how much milk you want in there? That would be too much for me, though I do like my breve's.

Yes, the milk is in a jug that you can just pull out and put back in the fridge. There's also a hot water spout for Americanos. You can set the amount of milk you want for the size of cup as well as setting how much coffee you want.
The downside is that the frothing is automatic and you can't set the temperature. This means that the milkier coffees are a little on the cool side, but that's something I just get used to, so now a latte has turned into a cooler, more refreshing coffee rather than the tongue-burner it was before.

There's a world of difference. Jim will back me up on this. Becky too, because she buys hers fresh roasted. If you drink your coffee 2-10 days from roasting time, you get all sorts of flavors. Everything from dark chocolate, to fuit, to nutty, to earthy. Everything after 7 days starts turning to "roast flavor" like "medium" "French" "Vienna" etc...whatever that particular coffee was roasted to, and it's origin doesn't matter one bit as the coffee ages because you lose all of the "origin flavors" after a certain amount of time.
When I buy my coffee, I buy such a variety, because central American tastes so much different than Brazillian or Tanzanian or Costa Rican ect etc. But until you roast your own (or buy it from premises that roast same day etc) you never get to experience the true flavors of coffee. It's a whole new world. Seriously.
And as it ages, during that first 10 days, the flavors change. And you can make a regular latte that tastes good, then do an iced late with the same coffee and it will have a different flavor, because of the origin tastes...you know you've got it if it tastes different hot, different warm and different cold.
I just roasted a blend that I wasn't a fan of at all. And that's unusual for me. I can usually find a way to like it (hot or cold or rested for a while etc).
It's just a whole new world. Really. (lol, I am feverish...I just re-read this and realized I was doing the Aladdin "Whole new world" song in a coffee post).

So, what is the difference between a Latte Macchiato and a Cappuccino? I know when I make a cappuccino, I use about the same amount of frothed milk to espresso, but then that is just my unknowing method. There are so many other terms out there for coffee types, it makes me confuzzled.
I mostly drink black, whether coffee, espresso or an Americano. I do like to have the odd cappuccino or "Whatever you call hot chocolate with espresso". :D

You can store green beans for a long time in cool dry conditions. The longest I've kept mine is 2 years. Mostly I rotate stock every 6 months.
I buy 90% of my beans from www.sweetmarias.com
they have information on their site too.

coffeegeek.com is a forum about coffee. They talk a lot about home roasting.
I bought my roaster from roastmasters.com because it came with 8lbs of green beans.
It takes some time to get used to your roaster and learn the differences btw. roasts. I wasted about 10lbs of coffee (and by that, I only killed 2 roasts, the other 8 were varying degrees of good/bad) til I got it down how I like it.

A Macchiato is basically a latte with less milk. Technically, it should really be an espresso "stained" with frothed milk, but there's a wide range of accepted recipes for it.
My machine has different milk settings for latte/capuccino and macchiato. I think they're different grades of froth and temperature.
I tend to stick with Americano, which the machine does very well (smooth taste, nice crema) or espresso (which I can make so strong that it'll make your eyes ache).

Wow. Just wow.
Tons of difference. I know others have already chimed in on this, but I'll give my 2¢ worth. I liked coffee OK. Could take it or leave it, wasn't a big deal to me. I drank it when I needed the extra caffeine buzz, to be honest, like when I was working graveyard or doing the mid-watch. Otherwise, I was just as happy with tea or hot chocolate. Most of the coffee that was offered to me, I now know, was over roasted or burnt and labeled with some alluring name of "French Roast" or "Vienna Roast" or "Burnt To A Cinder Roast".
I had no idea there was anything other than the coffee that came out of the big stainless steel urn on the Mess Deck. More like bilge sludge, really.
Then we went to Hawaii, what, about three or so years ago. One morning, I was suffering a bit of jet lag and had a cuppa.
Pow. It was like nothing I had ever tasted. It had flavors. It was smooth. It was love in a little cup. The hotel where we were staying was hosting an annual Coffee Growers and Roasters Convention. I was drinking freshly roasted and brewed Kona coffee.
Near the end of our little visit, we took a tour of a local coffee plantation and discovered that one could buy "green" coffee beans fresh from the site. My Son in Law, Brian, had been roasting his own coffee for a while using some fabricated roaster. We never thought much of it. Then we found out that one of my close friends was roasting his own coffee with an actual home roasting unit. (he has since started up his own coffee roasting business)
So, for a birthday present to Lisa (or anniversary, or Christmas, or Easter, or something), I got her a coffee roaster.
Since then, I love coffee. I find myself trying to keep myself from getting all giddy when a new blend is tried. I've discovered my own favorites and, surprising to me, am able to distinguish different flavors within the first sip.
And there's nothing better than coming home to a house that has that "freshly roasted" scent. Even the dogs smell like roasted coffee.
When it comes to freshly roasted coffee, I'm all for it.

Infatuation is a good word. It's more like eating really cheap chocolate for your whole life then having the opportunity to eat the really good stuff. Cheap cigars v. Havanas. Gut rot whiskey v. Single malt well aged stuff. Seeing pictures of Yosemite v. seeing the real thing. Etc, etc, etc.

Roasters are great, and Lisa, Jim and others would be the better ones with whom to have that convo.
Here's the thing that I noticed about roasting your own beans:
You gotta plan ahead. If you're running low on roasted beans, you have to roast right away. Not many beans are usable right out of the roaster. They take a few days to "degas". There's a science to that, and I ain't good at it.
It can be spendy. To get a good roaster you gotta want to shell out some moolah. Cheap roasters will die on you pretty fast and they don't always work that well. Just like in most camera stuff, you get what you pay for. Add to that the cost of beans. Coffee has been chasing the gold prices lately, especially for the really good stuff.
If you really get into it, it can be time consuming. It takes some time to roast a couple of pounds of coffee. It's not something that you can "set it and forget it". You have to be there watching the roaster do its thing. Why? Well, it can be a fire hazard. There's a happy thought.
You may want to look around town first and see if there's a local roaster. Go there and try some freshly roasted and fully degassed beans. Try different "origins". See if it's something worth doing, or if it's just easier to buy from the roaster.
The up-side of roasting your own beans is you can create your own style of roasts. A local roaster may always have his Sigri roast far beyond second crack, which is a little too done. By roasting your own, you can experiment and see which bean tastes better when roasted to what point.

I don't drink a whole bunch of coffee. I'm pretty caffeine sensitive. I'm a cheap bistro date. I just like the cup now more than I did before.
And talking about coffee....

Happy Forever Home Day Anniversary, Maggie!
Happy Anniversary Chris & Maggie!
Bwaahahahahahahahahahahaha

Gah! *melts into a blubbering puddle of tears*
Since Ashley died more than four years ago she's appeared my dreams exactly twice. The first one was a nightmare I had very shortly after her death.
The second time was just yesterday. I've mentioned here before that my dreams are always *very* vivid, but I don't even know how to describe yesterday's dream. Well, except, it wasn't a dream. It felt so amazingly real! I think Ashley came back to visit me...

You two certainly had a bond, and there's no proof that I'm aware of that such a connection doesn't survive beyond physical life. She was really a very special pup, and everyone who knew her absolutely adored her.

This morning I felt the itch to look up a post I made in an old version of this thread. I knew pretty much what year/date I'd posted it, and figured it wouldn't take too long to find the right thread that covered that time period. Just check the first and last post of each until I zoom in. Then, the thought occurred to me that it sure would be nice if all of the links in the first post of each iteration of this thread included the date range. When I loaded up page one of this 46th version, to begin my search, I discovered the links *do* include the dates now! A little further investigation shows that it's been that way for three versions of the thread now.
Nice touch, Jon! Thanks!

Wow.
[/testimony]
I always like the coffee I had on a long, dull midwatch on the bridge...

Gaccccccccccccck.....
As far as regular brewed or drip coffee goes, the advent of the auto shut-off was a godsend. At least it stops killing the brew, and a quick heat in the microwave works okay.
