Interesting?
"US scientists claim to have developed a technology that will forever banish blurred photographs.
Ren Ng, a researcher at Stanford University in California, has built a 'light field', also known as a plenoptic, camera that overcomes depth of field restrictions to capture every object in focus."
See http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/79732/researchers-refine-clear-shot-camera.html for full write up
and

for examples.

This is nothing new, a lens for film cameras was developed here in NZ about 10 years ago that has an infinite depth of field.

I don't feel like reading this again, but if I remember right (I saw this thing a while ago) it's not about infinite depth of field. If I remember right is to have some more data written to file and you can select later on computer where focus is.
My personal opinion if this really works? Even nowadays almost every monkey can take sharp photos already... with this it's end of photography as art and literally every monkey will be able to take perfect sharp and perfect exposed photos. And that's more then enough for 90% (probably more) of people. But I guess that's life. All I'm still waiting to see is to have sportsmen equiped with transmiters for triggering cameras when they will be in focus, so our work will be to screw camera to stand and to pick them up on end.

They've been making cameras for a few years now that have essentially unlimited depth of field. I think they're called compact point-and-shoot cameras.
:D

Those terms should be seperated.
Compact, or point and shoot.
My compact A80 has more functionality and manual control than my girl fiends Point and shoot SLR which only has 5 scene modes, and dosn't even allow apature control.
just a small gripe

but of course the art in photography is the art of framing rather than the technical details...although having a good eye for focus is going to get you places a lot quicker than relying on autofocus...

Oddly enough, I typically don't use the terms conjunctively in the same sentence like that. I agree with you that the two are not necessarily one in the same.
My last digital camera is what I would term a Point and Shoot, having only full auto, Av and Tv modes available, but it definitely is not compact, being only slightly smaller than a Rebel XT.
Our Canon A510 is definitely compact, but has many features, including full manual and, something I discovered the other day, a pretty good continuous shooting mode.

Yep, and desktop publishing was suppose to be the end of the printing and graphic industry. Looks to me that hasn't happened yet.
OK, a better one... I can write - but I'm definitely not a writer! *s*
