Are all cf cards created equal?
Are there brands that I should avoid?

No, they are not.

Even dou I can't understand half of what they say in that page (and didn't bother reading the 2nd page - reviews), I know that I do a have CF type I, SanDisk 64MB and it works great. :-D

To further point out differences in CF cards, I recently purchased a SanDisk USB2 card reader. It is extremely
fast, compared to downloads from cameras, but one type of card does not work with it.
I have used 128 Mb SanDisk, 16Mb Canon, 1Gig Transcend 30X cards and they all worked normally, but a 256 Mb Kingston CF (code MMA) would not work.
I wrote to Kingston support and they answered that it was not their problem. So based on my experiences, I do not recommend that brand of CF card.
Cheers,
snead
