I noticed that Pekka has made some changes to the forum rules (sorry Ian I'm still within them and you can't ban me yet).
The one that I found somewhat interesting is this one:
User signature should go into the dedicated signature box and NOT in the actual post. Signature must not contain large fonts or distractive elements.
This has always been a mild irritant to me in that many of the post the signature lines are many times larger than the acutal posters message. I can understand wanting to share with others what you have but to break it down to some of the simplistic flash brackets we own is taking it a bit far, in my opinion.
If everyone kept their signatures to the baiscs we would certainly be able to fit more responses per page.
How many have actually seen all the changes that Pekka posted a few days ago.
Flame suit zipped up now.

So, if I hear you right, you're saying that the limit of the signature should be kept to the basics (spelling changed)!
What in the heck are the basics? Are they defined by your interpretation or fixed? Apparently they aren't fixed and I think that's good. So that gets us back to "kept to the basics" which is undefinable!
This reminds me of what Shakespeare wrote a long time ago, "Much Ado About Nothing"!

Come on Jonny, give the guy a break! :)
In the end it does boil down to interpretation. We could give you specific rules about the number of lines of text, the size, colour etc. But that is likely to cause as many problems as it would solve.

I think this is a good opportunity to exchange ideas. This is a valid question, and differing opinions are all welcome.

A while back, I was put down, so to speak, because my signature was too long in the moderators opinion! He didn't say what "too long" was so maybe that's why I'm a little put off by this topic. I immediately shortened my signature. He said I was costing them bandwidth for every post of mine.
I don't want to cause a problem but when I saw peoples signatures I naturally created mine. I didn't think it was "too long" but I guess he thought it was. Truth is though, it wasn't as long as some others but maybe they had been around longer than me or something but I don't know. Who am I to say? I just hope the "signature police" won't get me again...:(

Currently there is 500 character limit on signatures. You may use BBcode and smilies, but no images. Those max. 500 characters include all the coding, too.
The rule I made about signatures is for people who misuse signatures for attention seeking and self-advertising. Because you can use BBcode, it is possible to do extremely annoying signatures with it!
A good rule of thumb is: when signature is not more dominant than your post then it is a good siganture. It can provide info, gear, a joke, plea, whatever, but it should not steal attention from actual posts.

Thanks for the explanation of the rules on signatures Pekka! I appreciate it.

As for listing equipment. One could also do as I do. Put the equipment list on Your own site and link to it. Then the equipment list can be as long and extensive as You like but noone is forced to look at it.

I like to list my equipment so that people that have questions about it can ask. And maybe to brag that I have the 20D which I'm insanely proud of.:D:D:D

Of course you know you slighted the whole country of Canada and probably a good portion of your own citizens. Now if we had an army.....oh well... never mind.
