View Full Version : Responding to picture critiques

Maybe I offended some forum members without knowing it but I'm not really sure.
If I submit a picture and some people respond with a comment or critique (c and c) and I don't respond with thanks to each forum member, are the members offended?
I just noticed some submitters respond to c and c and some don't.
Just wondering.

Just don't be nasty because there are minors and ladys that read this forum. Be helpful in your reply and you won't feel guilty and you don't have to reply if you don't want to.

I think it is a matter of personal preference and a way of bumping up the post count. Some repsond to each and every comment on their photos. I personally will wait until it appears the comments are over and respond with a simple thank you. If someone in the middle of the thread asks a pertinent question I will obviously reply.
I certainly am not offended if I comment on someones shot and they don't thank me.

A general thanks is always good.
I don't usually reply to every single comment in a new post though. Hehe, I think they just want Elite member status immediately.
Post count shouldn't reflect anything, just as long as you're fair, and fun, and post some photos from time to time... Then you're a great member in my eyes. ;)

What offends me is people that do reply back to every single comment on a post... makes me think they're illegally bumping the post up.
A thank you when it looks like the activity has stopped is a nice thing, but not required - it's also a good time to answer any questions that came up.
Remembering to comment on other people's posts is, probably, most welcomed.

I don't expect a "Thanks for the comment", or even a comment at all, but do appreciate the timely "Crappy shot!" post when it saves a new thread from page 2! :D
Marie responds to each post & I don't see any problem with that. I usually respond to all the posts at once in the AM & let the thread go for the rest of the day, unless there's a specific question that could use an immediate answer. "Different strokes..." ;)

I have never, ever gotten even slightly offended if someone didn't thank me specifically for my to comment to their image.
When I post an image I approach it much like Frank - I say "Thanks everyone!" after a bunch of comments and I respond to specific questions or comments in a timely manner. I usually do this in a single reply rather than quote each person in a new post, but that's me. I'll often not post another "thanks" in order to let one of my images fall gracefully off page 1. I hope nobody minds if I don't respond to those final comments.
I do think it's important to share comments and images. It would be a lousy thing if one posted images and expected comment but never gave comments themselves. I can't personally think of this ever happening here but it may have.
Another thing that I consider important is what I call "Rescue The Low Count." If I see a post at the bottom of page 1 and it has Zero comments I wonder why and check it out. If I can honestly make a comment I will do so, sometimes resorting to a critique in order to give the person *some* feedback. It's not always possible to comment , but I try.

I respond to critiques of my shots only if I have something to say.
That means saying "Thnx dude" to every critique is out.
I can't stand to see a thread with 30 posts, and 15 of them are from the original poster and at least 14 of those 15 add nothing. Then of course, original prolific typist will, in short order, post a self congratulatory "I have only been a member for 4 months and already have 2000 posts!" message. As though that is something to be proud of. Needs a life, desperately.
If someone has a question that I did not cover in my original post, then I will respond with a private message. If the question is more universally relevant, then I will reply in the post. But again, for me, the acid test is "Will my comments to the comments be a constructive addition to this thread, and the community in general?" If not, I keep quiet.

speaking of which, CDS just posted 4 successive replies in the 'spelling thread'. He should be banned immediately! :-P;)
On a more serious note, I don't post an x number of times in reply to all who commented, I just thank them all, and if I find the need to thank/reply to someone particularly, I do so in the same post.
