O.K., it's time for me to come out of the woodwork and onto the page. I've been ghosting here for about a year now, learning from all of your posts, and I'm at the stage where I feel comfortable contributing. This is my first post.

I just ordered my 5D (YIPPEE!) from B&H - pulled the trigger on Thursday afternoon, and they shipped the same day. I selected UPS 2-day, so it'll arrive at my office on Monday. (It's gonna be a looooong weekend, folks!)

I've been shooting with a 10D for a couple of years - you can view some of my photos at http://www.pbase.com/johnme23 - and the allure of full frame and increased resolution was finally just too much for me to resist. The mastercard crew are gonna love me for a couple of months!

There's only one lens in my current repertoire that won't be usable on the new camera: my beloved Tamron 28-70 2.8 Di. Guess I'll have to content myself for the short term with the Canon 50 1.8, Sigma 17-35 EX HSM 2.8-4, Sigma 105 EX Macro, and my recently-acquired Canon 70-200 2.8L IS.

Any experience out there using the 5D with these Sigma lenses? Should I expect to encounter any problems with them? (Of course, it won't take me long to find out.)

Congrats!!! I love my 5D and my 70-200 2.8 IS. Good luck with those Sigmas. If they don't work right away, you might be able to have them rechipped. Let's see some pics soon...

Thanks, guys. I'll let you all know how things work out. Now, with bigger file sizes, I guess I'll need a faster computer. (This buying spree never ends, does it?)

Congratulations on the 5D. That baby looks very interesting.
Tell me. Why won't your Tamron work with the 5D? Seems to me that would be perfect with a ff???

It'll work, but if they aren't very high quality the 5D exposes their little difficiencies, unlike a 1.3 or 1.6 crop camera.

Skip, maybe I'm wrong (hey, I HOPE I'm wrong!), but my understanding is that the "Di" designation on the lens means it's optimized for digital - meaning sub-35mm frame cameras. I suppose the proof will be in the pudding, and I'll be sure to report my experience with the lens once the camera arrives.

From some sample images seen, it shows vignetting with that lens. The 5D is a high quality camera, which gives stellar results, but also magnifies the small things that didn't show up with a cropped camera. If you shoot RAW though, there is a feature that allows you to eliminate it though.

My wife has a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di LD. On her 20D it consistently outperforms her 16-35 L and 135 L. For me the only drawback is that the Tamron is not wide enough on the 20D but should be terrific on the 5D.

Di means that the glass is coated to reduce reflections that are problematic in digital. It should work with your 5D just fine.

Thanks, guys, for sharing your experience. I'm feeling better already, and I haven't even had my first cup of Sat. morning coffee! That Tamron lens has been my workhorse ever since I bought it, and my experience has been the same as Skip's: great performance.

I mean, when you can end up with an image like this, taken hand-held on a foggy day, what more could someone ask?
