View Full Version : TIP: attaching images

Here is a quick tip for attaching images to posts and show them in the body instead of in the attachment box in the bottom.

Attach the image as You would normally do.

Position the cursor where You want the attached image to appear.

39578

From the little menu next to the paperclip (in advanced editor) choose the actual atachment, that post a bbcode that looks like this xxxx which show the attachment as above instead of in the attachment box below.

I have attached 2 copies of the logo to illustrate the difference.

What do you put where the xxxx is?

Hehe yeah its amazing what can be learned by reading this FAQ (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/faq.php) in the section vB codes. Theres a vB code to link to another post via postid and another thread via threadid. Check it out.

Is it possible to reuse an attachment in another post so that an image that has previously been uploaded does not have to be uploaded again when used in another thread?

Yes. Both of the above shots are saved as http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=43347&d=1134185931

OK, so the next question. How do you know what the attachment number is? I went iinto my profile and was able to see all the files I've attached in one post or another but there's no reference number that I could see for them.

[Edit: Never mind. I think I've figured it out. When you click on the file name, it shows the attachment ID in the URL.]

Apparently nothing. It just doesn't work when you try to add another link to an existing attachment in a new thread.

I get that, too, but not with all pictures; just some of them although they're on the same page, which I don't understand. But this is only at work when I'm using IE. Works fine with Firefox, though.

Hi
Thanks, [ attach]xxx[/ attach] works fine to insert the attachment were you like within the post, although I think it can not be used to repeat an attachment in other place.

This is my web cam, disassembled:

The above image was uploaded with this post and inserted with the attach code.

It seems a common problem under specific circumstances.

My son sees the red x when the attachment is inserted as described below, but I see the image normally, and both are Dell computers running Windows XP Professional with Internet Explorer 6.
The only difference is that my son has XP in English and I have XP in Spanish.
We are searching for some different settings in preferences or security, but nothing found yet.

Now an attachment from other post of mine using the code in blue below:

To double up on my father's post, I only see X's in the attachments, except when they are made the "correct" way, and they are presented with the rounded frame. I have not been able to pinpoint the problem: I have reduced the security settings of my IE, and also added the site as a trusted site ( I thought the security issues of attachments where the problem) but I have had no luck.

In my case my luck is even worse than PacAce as my Firefox turns out only info and no picture, so no luck there either. I wrote to Pekka with my problem and what I thought was the cause of the problem but I never received answer (and unfortunately my original guesses that pointed to code issues where mistaken) so I am at a loss. I find myself copying the properties of the link into a new window and adding the database portion of the URL to see what other people talk about. So please if you JaertX or PacAce ever find out what the problem was, please post it here, or PM me with your findings.

Thanks,

Rafael Polit Jr.

rpolitsr - yes, I can see both your images. It seems to be an intermitent problem. I tried it on a post I made and it worked when I first viewed it. When I went back to respond later, it was a red x, so I changed it back to the "attachment in a bubble." So for now, I can see them, but I wouldn't doubt if sooner or later I come back and it won't work. Maybe it's only something that IE users are experiencing? (the intermittent problem)

Hey I was having the same problem getting red x's for alot of the photos in this post. When I copied an insert URL to IE the browser and went direct told me I wasn't logged in to POTN and therefor not able to see the picture (even though I thought I was logged in). When I logged in again, and then backspaced to this thread, all the images were visable.

If you wish to use your attachment elsewhere, you can collect the exact location where it lives by going to User CP and choosing the "Attachments" option. It'll list all your attachments; right-clicking on one will give you a URL you can use with the [IMG] tags.

Does anybody know why I can't get my attachment to show up in my post here:

I've never had problems with my attachments before.

Thanks JaertX for the info.
I use IE6 and I do not have problems neither with mine nor with others’ attachments. Some IE6 users experiment the issue though. I understood it is not intermittent.

pushtoexit pointed out an interesting clue about a possible login issue that for an unknown reason I do not experiment.

PacAce I see both your post and the attachments.
I guess it is not a problem with the attachments themselves but with the code used to link to them within the post.
I know the code is correct, but for a still unknown reason some computers do not understand the code as they should.

Please let me know if you see the two attachments in my previous post (#39 of this thread).

Note that www.photography-on-the.net/forum needs a different login to photography-on-the.net/forum ! Cookies are stupido.

This means: when you are logged in photography-on-the.net/forum and attachment is "coming from" www.photography-on-the.net/forum you can not see it until you login to www.photography-on-the.net/forum as well.

RafaPolit

Thanks Pekka!!! That solved the problem.

Strangely enough, either www.pho.. or the URL without www both showed me as logged in, so I had to log out of both! and then log in again in both to get it to work. I couldnt just log in to one or the other (and I couldnt log out of www.phot... before loging out of the non www url).

Anyway, I can see the pictures now! Great.

Thanks,

Sorry being lazy here and didnt read all the way through the posts that would have probably answered my question:

When posting an image do I have to "slim it down" first or does this site do that for me, like on some other forums?

Is this alternate method of posting images the reason I don't see the "paperclip" next to a thread even though it has an image embedded in it ?

I don't know about that, but when I link images from my photo host site there is no "paperclip"

It seems it depends where You see the thread. In usercp there is no paperclip but in new posts list there is a paperclip.

Figured it out by right clicking on the image for properties. The ones without the paperclip are links to other hosts. Learn somethin' new every day:lol:
