Nice shots Ben, what software did you use to uprez? And may I ask why you uprezzed? Just curious as to what the application is that needs larger than 12.8MP.
Nice clear shot BlackRainbow! I cheat and use an 8" telescope and don't get it that clear!

Yeah, it's probably around 8-12 shots stitched together. Gives a very swallow DOF if done correctly.

Cory, I would venture a guess that his camera metered off the bright pink dress in sunlight, which threw the background ambient exposed dark. As far as that goes when using a flash, try High Speed Sync. Works very well as long as you're not too far away.

You are prob right Dale with regards to the metering. Good thought. However, I'm all Yongnuo manual, great flash guns at a ultra cheap price compared to the canons. I aborted the HSS effort after figuring out how much power I was loosing.

Nice shots Pulsar. Looks like the "too long" issue is totally dependent on available space. On a FF and trying to get a full body shot, it's going to take some 30'. On a crop body you're looking at 45'+. Hard to do that in most indoor locations for sure!
Look at this chart from a booklet that came with Canon FD lenses back in the mid 1970's. Pretty cool image of what it takes to get a 6' tall person in the frame.

This is not an indoors lens on a crop body, unless it is huge indoors space - like sports or performances. The same way 200mm lenses (f2.8, f2.0, f1.8 ...) are not indoors lenses for full frame. As long as one remembers that, the lens is not too long on a crop body. There is simply nothing in this price range which can produce such full height portrait magic as 135L, on crop or FF.

A 200mm f/2.8 on a full frame body will look like the 135mm f/2.0 on a crop body.
for field of view and dof, yes... but background compression/distortion will be the same FF or crop...
Background compression depends on camera to subject distance. If you use the 135L on a crop body you will have to stand further away to get the same framing that you would with a 135L on full frame. Due to this extra camera-subject distance, it will end up looking the same as a 200mm f/2.8 lens would on a full frame body.
^^^^ Nice shots, welcome to the club!
Thanks! Your photos are great too, great use of the DOF.
I agree, the DOF and subject isolation is great in all of your shots.
My only comment would be on the processing. I think it's kind of your style, so take it how you may, but I think all of your shots have the contrast pumped up way, way too much. The colors never look natural. It's enough to detract from the photo in my mind. I would prefer a more subdued processing. But, like I said, I think this is your style/preference, this is just my opinion.

at 135mm, how do you guys keep it steady w/o IS? shoot mainly during day?

Turn up the ISO and keep my shutter at 1/200 or better, sometimes I'll try my luck at 1/160 or 125. Any modern camera will let you use 1600 or 3200 ISO without much penalty in noise. Even 6400 is usually acceptable. If you need to stop down for DOF, you might be in trouble.

Your 5DIII is capable of shooting high ISOs without fear of grain. Try shooting 1250-2000, depending on your light. Open up that lens and keep your shuuter speed at least 160-300. With a little practice you should be able to capture action and stills without any problem.

You're right although I don't agree with the statement ''the colors never look natural''. This is my preference as I have more artistic approach on photography. Of course I respect your opinion, it is a personal taste. My wife for example doesn't like Nutella, how could you explain me that LOL :)

Some of the edits look more natural than others, but most have the saturation cranked way up. I've also noticed that a lot seem to have a bit of oversharpening, so that the OOF backgrounds don't looks smooth. They get a bit of a "messy" look to them. Depending on your workflow this may only apply to online viewing though. The full resolution prints could very possibly look a lot different.
But, yes, this is just my opinion. I am glad you can understand that and not take offense to my comments. In fact, I don't care for Nutella much myself! :) I would be curious to see some of your shots before/after editing. I have a feeling I would actually prefer the straight out of camera versions. The posing/lighting/locations usually look very nice.

at 135mm, how do you guys keep it steady w/o IS? shoot mainly during day?
when i had 100mm f/2 on 7D, i struggled getting sharp shots in low lit room, just couldn't keep it steady. :-(
I usually bring my 85 or 50 at night, for low light 1, and BC I'm usually indoors at night and can't use 135 FL. But that's just me.
The 135 is my favorite lens and I've had plenty!

I've owned the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II...
Sold it and picked up the 135L and save the rest of the cash... just saying.. to me the 135L is better but that's just me.
I agree. I sold my 135 when I got my 70-200 II, but now regret it. Would like to trade it back again, perhaps for a 135 and 35L:cool:

I had the 135L, sold it for lack of use and eventually picked up the 70-200II when it came out. While more versatile, it just isn't a 135L. I've been told that the 70-200II has better color and contrast. I've been told that the 70-200II is just as sharp. I've been told that the 70-200II has bokeh that is just as good.
From what I see (having sold the 70-200II and re-bought the 135L recently) it doesn't matter how you stack it, the 70-200II just doesn't add up to 135L IQ. Explain it any way you want to, but when I first started shooting with the 135L again I was immediately impressed with how rich the images were. I wasn't looking for or expecting any significant difference - to me the 135L is a tool - but the IQ is pretty damned good. While the 70-200II is a definite improvement over the mkI version, it'll never be f/2 prime.

Hey Cory, keep in mind that the perspective issue comes into play. With many of your photographs you can't simply walk closer to your subject to get the composition and perspective you want (well, unless you can walk on water but that's only been done by one person that I know of!) so a zoom lens encompassing the 135 focal length almost directly in the middle of it's range would actually do you a lot of good. For those times when 135 is too close, 70mm comes in very handy. For those time that 135 is not reaching the kayak in the heaviest white water, 200mm at 2.8 really makes the shot. You don't have to drop the big bucks on the II version and it's pretty widely known that the non IS f/4 is incredibly sharp while being much lighter and easier to carry. Just a thought.
The 135 definately has a high place in Canon's lineup with the incredible images it takes, but it's not a all-encompassing walk about lens for the majority of users. I'm definately interested in it's use as a portrait lens though!

My thoughts exactly Dale. Good points. It would really be hard to part with the 135, the 70-200 f/4 might be a nice tool for the versatility.

A big plus for the 70-200 f/4 NON IS ....$710 at Adorama as of a few minutes ago! I think that's a little bit cheaper than the 2.8 IS II version....
And yes, this would compliment the 135 very well, with a tragic loss of Bokeh though.

well I leave mine on 0.9 ... 1.6 just prevents the lens from focusing any closer than 5 feet. So I would say you'll be fine at 1.6 for subjects farther than 10'. I only change to 1.6 if the focus starts to hunt to much and slows things down. Please, someone correct me if I am not understanding what the 2 do completely.

Yea, I just couldn't enjoy the 35L. The bokeh was too busy for me, and the FL just never worked for me either. I shot two weddings with it and a had a bunch of portrait sessions and just could not learn to enjoy it. I prefer the look of longer lenses so I ended up using my 70-200 f/2.8 IS more often then the 35L. The 35L is a great lens, dont get me wrong. It just wasnt for me. Ill stick to my 24/50/85/135/70-200 combo LOL... oh yea almost forgot the 17-40

You really need to start quoting the tags on the picture so people know what you are commenting on... Edit the bb code to get rid of the / on the last IMG so people at least have the path of the picture you are commenting on.

Outstanding shots dtufino...great light. I cracked off 100 or so shots up at the Cascade whitewater park today but it was midday sun. Quite harsh. Not totally stoked on them. The setting would be great for an evening shoot in that the waves are west facing for perfect golden hour shots. Nonetheless I thought I would share one of yours truly, idsurfer surfin' ID! :D
