Hi
I'm a new member and just bought my first canon, a D30. will use it to shoot a lot of longer telephoto stuff. Have narrowed my lens picks down to 4 and would appreciate any help I could get to decide between them.
They are:
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 macro
Sigma 100-300 F/4
Sigma 300 f/4
canon 70-200 f/4
Any and all opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Ken

I would stay with Canon lenses only if you can afford them. They are made better, they are sharper and they have a resale value much greater than the Sigmas. If money is a factor, Sigmas can be a good value. I personally would stick with the EX Sigma lenses. They have very good macro lenses. Good luck.

Why do you have two 70-200 lens. dump the f4 and but a extender for your 70- 200 which will give you some legth on a faster lens

Keep in mind the 1.6 multiplier if you're coming from film.
24mm on a film camera is a 24*1.6=38 on everything but the 1Ds.

Ken,
RUN, don't walk, to your nearest camera store and buy the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L. It's that good! :)

Hi Ken,
O-kay,.. contradictory advise coming,..
But I'm with Sporto. I have the 10D and take a LOT of pictures with the Sigma EX 70-200mm F/2.8 (it is NOT a Macro by the way)
This is a great Combo! its effective focal length is 112mm-320mm wih the 1.6 "Crop factor" I am very impressed with this lens. And for less than $600.00 it is very versatile. Add the 1.4X or 2X Sigam Teleconverters for about $150.00 each and you can have a very effective 640mm lens!!!!!
The Sigma EX series are,. imho excellent lenses. The more pros I meet, the more I am seeing Sigma lenses.

What about the 1D?... 1.3x...24x1.3=31

I'm slowly moving to better lens to match my new 10D.
I had a 24/85 3.5-4.5 CANON, 100/300 4.5-5.6 CANON ans a 105/2.8 EX SIGMA EX.
After 4000 pics, I'm planning to use the 24-85 which is not bad for a consumer grade lens, to sell the 100-300 (which is good until 200mm) for a CANON 70-200/4 L.
The 105 Macro is excellent withe the 10D.

Did you have to get it rechipped ? They've had mine for nearly 4 weeks now.

They had to re-chip an EX Sigma???
How old was it? I have two of the EX seies and thought they were exempt from the error99 problem. Perhaps it has more to do with date?
Anyway,. new EX Sigmas seem to work fine.

Sigma did tell me that new lenses should be ok....mine is a couple of years old, the problem seems to be the aperture not stopping down.
