Just a quick taster from one of the bouts...

There are some more images in a very 'rough and ready' (i.e. unprocessed) gallery here for those that are interested...

It's been a busy weekend and a busy week ahead - so apologies for not linking directly to a few more of the pics... but a flying visit for now!

Nice shot. Is that his own block being pushed into his face?

Completely unrelated question - looks like you are using BreezeBrowswer. Is there a reason you choose it over Photo Mechanic, if that is indeed what you are using? Most everyone around here uses PM, but I came across BB and it looks reasonably good - but I guess the main thing is to be able to sort then ftp.... anyway... know you are busy... if you get a chance.... chees.

I think it's a direct hit but his glove is certainly there or thereabouts.

I've used BB and PM. I now use BB just because it runs a bit faster (particularly on my laptop) and it does what I need it to do (tag, batch caption, copy to folder for transmitting). It's as simple as that really. I've already got FTP software installed on all my machines and it's never caused me any problems not having the FTP facility built into BB.

Great shots Gavin, you don't see a lot of boxing photos (if any) on here so it makes a change, you certainly have some well timed shots.

Cheers

Thanks Gavin... I am like BB, but I am also looking to move to Mac over the holidays and I guess I had better wait and see what Apature has to offer. Unfortunately BB is not available for mac. I may hold off on changing out the laptop for a bit still. Cheers.

Cheers.Aperture certainly looks the part... but is a wee bit more expensive than good old BB ;) although it does appear to offer total integration... but also might be somewhat resource hungry.

Also, for another take on the web gallery - here's the PhotoShelter version: http://www.photoshelter.com/gallery-show/G0000bYZnjhcE7sw

Gavin, yes, that's exactly right ... you feel like you've been in a fight! I am amazed these guys are even standing at the end when I jump up on the mat to shoot the victory shot with the Ref holding up their hand or some stylized boxing pose. I looked at all the images ... excellent ... what settings do you use? (I guess I could have checked for EXIF, but didn't.)

Croasdail

No EXIF - I already checked.....

I just tried to shoot basketball with my 50 1.4 and everything, including the lens needs to be in the trash... dying to find out what kit was used.

Have a look under the images in the gallery for exposure details, for example: http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/boxing_goresbrook2/lomax_phelan_003.htm

Lens was 28-70mm f/2.8 on MkII body. I'd normally use the 50mm f/1.4 but this place was a stop brighter than usual!

Thanks ... I forgot the information was there. I was shooting at 1000 but can see that 1250 is fine. I like using my 24-70mm f2.8. I have just gotten a 50mm f1.4 ... very common amoungst the fight shooters ... and will try it next fight night. I also like to use my 70-200mm f2.8, although the percentage is low the faces are good. And at the last fight I switched to my 300mm f2.8L IS between rounds and really liked the images of the boxers being treated in their corners.

One more thing ... white balance ... AWB or something else?

I think I need to reset the tone or something for the fights ... that TV light just isn't right ... I see the same in all the images shot by others there, too. I keep planning to set a custom balance but when I get to the casino there are so many people who want to talk with me and so much to do that I never remember. Much simpler than touching it in post processing.

The good thing about shooting boxing is that the action takes place in a very confined space.... which makes it a bit easier to deal with than football or baseball for that matter. You just have to watch for the twitch of the shoulder, work on your timing and try to predict those combinations... ;)

Nice avatar, but it'll take some getting used to finding you! I am so overwhelmed with projects that my wife is letting me stay home while she and Anna attend Thanksgiving with her family for a few days at her brother's house. I have two big photo projects and one small one to complete, installing software so I can create my timelapse video of the boxing match setup/strike, filing receipts for the tons of equipment I have bought recently, getting storage into my office so I can clear a walking path on the floor and put the top two or three layers of stuff from my desk away. Then I need to shoot a couple of images to find out how to use some of the remote shooting equipment I bought as I mentioned earlier.

Anyone know why boxers don't wear shirts?

What's up with the 50 f/1.4? It's a peachy little lens thingmy...

Saves on washing I guess... blood can be tough to get out of a white polo shirt :D

I had high expectation for the little fifty too.... probably just me - felt like I was cheating on my 85 I guess. I just need to learn the lens better.

"Cheating on my 85"? Whoa, Mark, you need to get back on your meds, buddy!

Croasdail
26th of November 2005 (Sat), 12:43
You think that is bad... you don't even want to know what kind of relationship I have with my car...

But really, I have gotten so comfortable with the 85, it never lets me down. Even my big glass I know under certain conditions will provide less then optimal results. I have just shot so much with the 85, I can work my way around just about anything... the 50 has worked good for portrait work for me... but in sports I just not comfotable with it yet. It took me months to get the 70-200 to be predictale for me....

Anyway.... off to take my meds..... cheers.

EdHi Ed... and a warm welcome to POTN! Thanks for the kind words - much appreciated.

I'm certainly hopeful I'll get to shoot a whole lot more boxing in 2006! In the meantime, I'll be keeping an eye on your site for inspiration ;)

I'm chuffed and flattered to hear that John. I always hope that some of my passion for sport shows through in the images I make... that's the aim and, if I'm successful, then I'm a happy bunny ;)
