........it is true that women work there too......they fill up the candy dishes on the counters.......

It's a crazy store. There is a system of conveyor belts and elevators all over the store that deliver the products right to each different counter in each section of the store.

Nice article.

I've got to get up to NYC and see B&H in person.

Yeah and its so slow sometimes, beating it to the cashier then pick up... and its not there.. so annoying.

Pretty cool ... I have used them several times myself. I too would like to make it there... Maybe on the way to Maine next year I can stop in, we will see.

:) I was deeply intrigued with the conveyor belt system too. When I visit it two years agao, I was not into SLRs - so never paid too much attention to those massive looking barrels stacked all over the place. But now I know where to go if my wife wants to go window shopping....

Ironic,. but Yes the more common vernacular would have it "Mecca" for photgoraphers for sure! :)

I'll have to make the "Pilgrimage" soon :)

Made the trip from Oz to B&H 3 months ago. Amazing place. Had a Hassidic Jew nearly laugh himself of his stool behind the counter when I started to bargain him down on his price. He said no discounting . It got very heated... I tried and tried and he wouldnt budge. In the end I had the whole line of sales staff looking up the line at this dumb aussie (me) that wouldnt give up on trying to get a discount. I said he was giving me a massive amound of inner turmoil and grief. He wanted to know what the problem was . I told him that I couldnt cope with the fact that here I was in the largest camera store in the world full of more hassidic jews I had ever seen in one place in my life and I couldnt do a deal on price!. I said that this will have a profound effect on my negotiation skills for the rest of my life and I will never be the same again. Had him and the sales line laughing all the way down the counter . Bought a 20d and then went mad on acessories:) .

My wife was so amazed by it all she wanted to visit again the next day. And this is from someone who is not inerested in photography one iota!

Amazing joint....I'll be back early next year. Im addicted

What's the fun in that? If I go to B&H, I'm going to spend money! :)

Last night I dreamed I went to B&H... it turned into a nightmare though, as they'd stopped selling cameras and had started selling linen instead! I think I may have a problem... ;)

I live on the wrong side of the world (though it is safe and quiet), so a trip to B&H would be rather expensive for me :(

A very interesting article. I have gathered the bigger photo stores are run by members of the Jewish faith.

Does anyone have pictures of their store or warehouse outside of the ones in their catalogs ?

Lordy that is such an understatement....I'd compare B&H to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. B&H is hallowed ground for photo & video nuts.

It wasn't too long ago that there was a warehouse fire near B&H and someone on this forum declared "The Mother Ship is on Fire!" in a post. Fortunately, it wasn't the mother ship but the warehouse next door.

I've heard rumors that the name B&H is after the initials of the Owner's Wife and Himself.
