Just in case you haven't seen the trailers- looks like there will be some interesting movie macrophotography in the new David Attenborough series starting tomorrow (weds 23rd 9pm BBC1) including some of Racketman's springtails in action. Series called "Life in the Undergrowth".

Just another reminder not to miss the show- it's on tonight at 9.00pm. Just saw another clip where they have rigged up macrosound as well- has a caterpillar talking to ants (one of the caterpillars that convinces the ants to look after it).

I'm definately going to be watching this one Brian, it looks great. It's a night in front of the telly for me; an hour of bug heaven followed by the next episode of Lost on C4! Great! :D

OK I need to get out more... :o ;)

Just to say the first episode was brilliant- best nature prog I've seen in years. Now where can you buy a subminiature wide angle macro lens attachment?

I have to agree Brian it was amazing. David Attenborough was fantastic as always but some of the footage was just jaw dropping! Wow. I'm really glad they are ending each episode with a short bit of "the making of", very interesting.

Those Springtails were so cool! I wonder if I'll be able to see them at 2x mag... somehow I doubt it! :D

Bound to show over there eventually, meanwhile we'll drive you mad telling you how great it was.
They had some amazing shots taken at around 1:1 of snails and millipedes where the narrator was in the background still in focus (ie DOF of several feet) I assume this was done with a miniature wide angle macro lens camera with a very small sensor size although the quality looked pretty good.... and springtails headbutting each other in a courtship dance was really funny;)

The book of the series is excellent also very many high quality images in it, Sir David will be also touring the UK signing copies of his books in local branches of Ottakers:cool: I bought it the day it came out I am a very big Sir David fan, he is just so enthusiastic about his subject, a Top man:cool:

Another series to watch is on next week at 3 in the afternoon it was trailered just before Life in the undergrowth ;)

That show was amazing - ! How do they get so much DOF into their camera work ?

Suspect it's using miniature cameras with small sensor area combined with wide angle close focusing lenses. You can get similar effects with some of the point&shoot digicams with macro capability. Downside of the DOF/small sensor effect is that the picture quality is not that good.

I found "Life in the Undergrowth" DVD on the amazon.co.uk website, but it is only in PAL, not NTSC format used in the states. There are some DVD players that have the encoding chip installed, but I do not. I will have to wait until it is available in the states.

Just a quick bump to remind all you bug fans here in the UK or if you can receive BBC1 elsewhere that this is on again tonight. Can't wait. :)

Hi Kraig,

Not sure this is right to post or if it is relevant to the topic, but you can find your answer here:

http://us.st11.yimg.com/store1.yimg.com/I/yhst-8336782827841_1874_4421332

Here is the procedure to reset the parental lock code:

Bring up a screen where the unit asks you to enter in the parental code. You can either insert a restricted disc, or enter the DVD setup menu and go to "parental control" under custom setup.

When the screen asks for the code, press the SELECT button, then enter in the code "7444".

The level adjustment under Parental Control dictates the strictness of the player. The lower the value, the more strict it will be. Either increase the value to lower the restriction, or disable the lock entirely by setting it to "off".

Once you have made your adjustments, be sure that the DVD tray is empty, and press the RESET button on the front of the Playstation 2. It is imperative the tray is clear of any DVD or game for the unit to save your settings.

Hope it helps,

The 7'' beetle made me shudder on last nights programme, I also like the "insight" at the end of the show, they are very informative and helpful:cool:
