They've gradually been replacing the mainline out here in the desert while they complete the double-tracking project. We're starting to see concrete ties, and there's been all manner of weird looking equipment running around. This has been going on for a couple years, and it seems to be almost done, at least between Indio and Los Angles. I do miss the smell of creosote.

Also, concrete generally doesn't like to get vibrated a whole lot. I'm surprised that concrete ties would hold together. I would think that cracks would form all over the place and eventually crumble.

5th of March 2012 (Mon), 08:02
I've heard tell they think the concrete ties will have 5x the lifespan of a wooden tie. It has to be a very plastic mix used to cast them. If vibration is an issue, that dynamic tamper should literally have been shaking the ties apart.

In my lifetime, they've had silver & red with yellow stripes, blue with yellow stripes, yellow with blue stripes, red & yellow (a temporary scheme done in anticipation of the merger with Southern Pacific --- it never happened), green and cream, and green and orange. Green and orange  ?
That's the classic war bonnet passenger scheme. People loved it. Although it was rarely used in freight service, most of the train sets that were sold with that engine came with freight cars.
The green and orange is actually a paint scheme they came up with after the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern. Here a photo of one. The green is very dark, and looks black in this photo.

Sorry to hear about your neighbor, Chet. Getting old is no fun, and sometimes, death is a blessing. We had brunch with friends yesterday. They are both in their late 70's, and are a study in contrasts. He is constantly active, and works part time at Lowe's. She leads a generally sedentary life, and yesterday, it really started to show. She's a lovely person, but yesterday, she just didn't feel well, and actually had to leave the table for prolonged periods 3 or 4 times. The change we've seen in her over the last year has been startling, and a bit disconcerting. She constantly complains about not feeling well, and that pretty much defines her whole existence these days.

IF I were to develop a yearning, I think the 100-400 and the 300 would become sacrificial but I love that damn 300 so much that I'd be hard pressed to let it go.
I'd probably sell the 135 as well but it's such a unique lens and can do such fun stuff:

Nice shot Jay.
Im a big fan of the 100-400 and the 135. I have never had the pleasure of shooting a big prime (dont consider the 200 f/2.0 one) so i will take your word for it. However, i can see how the flexibility of the 200-400 can be very beneficial to you.
It's pretty much my entire "long" arsenal wrapped up in one lens...
200-560 (260-728 on APS-H!) is a lot of flexibility.

Does this work ok for a soft butterfly shot?

Lovely package was waiting for me at home. My 20x30 prints from Adorama arrived 11 days ahead of expected delivery. They look AWESOME!! Really, really, really love the metallic!
Now, just to decide on what style and get them mounted. And then find wall space.

So I take it you are well over the big six O
Yeah, that was a while ago.
Don't worry, though. Emotionally, I'm still an 11-year old.

Hahaha that's a worry, then again my wife always say to me I am still like a child. I tell her getting old is inevitable but growing up is optional.

The Caterpillars are usually soft, but the butterflies are considered fragile.

Reminds me of my house in college. We had little guy, all 98 pounds of him that would go and pick fights when drunk. He never won either. We had to get him out of tussles nearly every weekend.

These two guys went at it....in round one, the guy in focus lost a part of his right wing tip. The background butterfly is posturing....trying to get the other one to go airborne again.

As the images portray. That mauling would have a profound effect on the butterfly's flight. Amazing that the do so much damage to each other.
