I always appreciated GM cars where you adjusted the points/dwell with an Allen wrench through a little window on the side of the distributor cap.
I hated dwell! Points I could handle.

If the Dog Kisses thing is anything like the old joke about "Your turn to use camel," then I don't want to know.
The history buff in me finds those old WWII images fascinating. The photographer in me wants to know how they achieved those exposures on ASA 25 film, indoors, without the subjects spontaneously combusting due to the 50K watts worth of light surrounding them! :shock:25? That didn't come along until Kodachrome II. ISTR 6, but anyhow 10 tops.
The wife is a breast cancer survivor....5 years now. First thing they did was to make a very, very generous contribution to the American Cancer Society. They are willing to spend every remaining cent on the dog. The vet told them it wasn't a matter of money. The cancer had simply spread too far....the dog had been in for his usual visit in January and they didn't find anything then. Safe to say they were crushed.
Bad news vastly outweighs the good, then . . . My sympathy; we've lost a few pups over the years.

Just put a cap, rotor and new plug wires on my car. Yup, I couldn't believe I still had one of those cap and rotor things either.
Always a good maintenance item!
It's been a long time since I worked on a car with a distributor.

I hated dwell! Points I could handle.
Doing it electronically by dwell was always better than trying to do it with a feeler gauge! I loved it when electronics came out, it made the job easier. Now instead of things like feeler gauges and tools we have a laptop to plug in and if you have the program (like HpTuner etc) you tune via the keyboard.

It's a never tune car. He picked it up for $400 5 years ago as a beater. He's in the service now so passed it to my youngest. It's never had an oil change. In fact, the only thing we've done to it is put in a new rear brake line. We are waiting for it to die. It did spring a hose leak about 3 years ago. We just pumped it full of radiator stop leak and it hasn't leaked since. My son does top it off with oil from time to time though but that's about it. It just keeps on going and going.

It's amazing how some abused vehicles just don't die. And yet some barely make it through a well cared for life. When I worked 5 miles from home my philosophy was to pick up a beater for no more than $250 and drive it until it dies. Then sell it to a junk yard. I'd usually get anywhere from 8 months to 2 years out of the car and maybe $150 from the junk man.
Car payments = $10 a month.
Insurance = liability only so dirt cheap.
I had a bunch of cars like that. I can't remember them all but some notable ones were.
Plymouth Duster with a 198 slant 6. That car just kept going and going. I finally sold it because I got tired of it. It wouldn't die.
Dodge Monoco - another great will not die car. Very roomy.
1979 Grand Prix. I wish I would have kept this one. What a beast. I never had it timed, but this thing was crazy fast.
Datsun B210 - The only way to accelerate in this car was to get it going down hill with a strong tail wind. Looked nice, but was 3 squirrels short in the engine department.
Toyota Corolla - Biggest turd I ever drove. Turned me off to Japanese cars forever.
1967 Caddi. - Another one I wish I would have kept. Other than the horrendous gas mileage, this car drove like a dream.
196? Goat - Another scary fast car. This and the Grand Prix could actually sit there and spin up the rear tires till they were smokin'.
Plymouth Valiant - The only cool thing about this car was the push button tranny. How high tech.
I can't really remember many of the others. I think there was a Chrysler in there but I can't remember which model. Also had a really old Mercedes diesel but only had it for a week. It was an early 60's car that I picked up for almost nothing. Guy offered me $1000 for it so I sold it right there. It was way to slow anyway. Comfy but slow.

We had a Ford Granada with cragers, monster mags with air shocks and capped off rear brakes for bleach burnouts. You could put the thing in reverse while going 50mph and it would go in to reverse. We couldn't kill that car, and let me tell ya we tried. So we sold it well beat for more than we paid for it. Six months later we bought one for $50 just to kill, and once again we were disappointed that it took the abuse.

The beauty of the GM cars was you could put a dwell meter on it, and adjust the points with the engine idling. It only took a few seconds. Any other car you had to shut off, remove the distributor catp, tweak the adjustment on the points, put the cap back on, start it, read the meter, repeat if necessary.

Yep, we did not have too many of those engines over here though, the 307, 327 and 350 were really the only real notables. We had the Holden 308, but it just was not in the same class of power, 175hp at the rear wheels was about average for a stocker. Now we have the LS engines, horsepower straight from the factory that is more than the bombed up ones we had and spent a small fortune on. Even my new 4 cylinder diesel has 163hp and 265 ft/lb of torque and it returns over 40 miles to the gallon!

Talk about major panic attack at the time it happened!!!
I'm at least happy with what I got on the SD card now I've looked at them, bonus if I can get the CF images back. Won't know if I'll trust that CF card again even after a PC format, which a quick bit of reading says is the best way to start again after something like this. I've ALWAYS formmated in the camera just before I start using the card on each shoot.

I ended up springing for CardRecovery. It did the job and was a lot more light weight and cheaper than Recovery Pro. ie CardRecovery was 800kB compare to 25MB.

I share your same sentiments JJ. I actually had a 5dmkIII preorder and only cancelled it a few days ago. Like you i wasn't really impressed by what i was seeing. The IQ jump has been showcased in JPEG images. However, i shoot RAW and i just couldn't trust what i was seeing out there. So i figured why not make a trip down today and give them a few snap shots. You are in a very good position because you have a 5dmkII and the difference (for now from the few images out there) doesnt seem large enough.

This is one of the reasons I don't want a 4G device.
The high demand for bandwidth because of all the tablet computers and smart phones is affecting the spectrum in negative ways. Amateur radio operators are concerned the government is going to start looking at our bands as a possible source of more spectrum and bandwidth.

No - that's LightSquared, who bought a block of satellite comms spectrum leases and wanted to build a land-based system in that frequency zone, which would have obliterated any high-precision GPS work. The regular wireless telcos are using spectrum that's allocated for ground-based mobile communications, and doesn't interfere with GPS or other satellite bands. However, I've seen at least some reports that AT&T's latest (nominally 3G, though they're calling it 4G based on performance) devices are faster than the Verizon LTE 4G devices.

Just drove in to Las Vegas tonight. That trip is a killer in ideal conditions, but when you do it in the dark on a Friday evening when every other idiot is on the road, it increases the stress level by orders of magnitude. And yes, I did include myself as one of the idiots. We couldn't do it any other time because of my brother-in-law's work schedule.
Anyway, we're here, so I'll try to make the best of it.

It's close to that here this morning with the marine layer of clouds, but it looks to be breaking up soon. It's about 10 degrees cooler than I like for the beach, but it's great walking weather. I managed a 4 mile walk in about about an hour this morning.

I just run conduit because it's easier and safer in the long run. So I just ran a main from the breaker to a distribution box in the attic and then from there wired in the lights, several outlets, the fan and such. It's not that hard but it does get hot up there.

My friend's parent's marriage was arranged. They did somewhat know each other before they got married at least. I know a lot of the marriages work out well, but I can only imagine what life would be like being married to someone you just really do not love or like, and having both families expect that you have a happy life together.

Her visa was about to expire, which meant she would have to return to Belgium soon, and she was crying over a beer in the bar. She wanted to stay in the U.S. and keep looking for her father. So, my grandpa told her "What the hell, I'll marry ya so you can stay."

The flight into SFO was one of the roughest I've been on in a long time. The pilot ordered the flight attendants seated and belted in for the last half of the flight. Someone hit the call button and they got on the PA and said unless it was a medical emergency, they were not going to respond. The plane got *very* quiet. That would really raise the anxiety level for sure. My worst flight was landing in TX during a t-storm. We were on final and really low and all of a sudden you hear the engines full throttle and a sinking feeling in your stomach. All I could think about was flight 191. We made it back up and went around. 15 minutes later on final again and the same thing. Either the conditions were really that bad (and the looked it) or the pilot was just really nervous from the first missed approach. Third time he made it but it was a rough landing.
