Battletanks in the UK have to be street legal too. as in indicator lights, mirrors etc. Naturally they can take them off when going to war :D

Last time we had a battle tank on our streets, it wasn't quite as nice...

It has lots of pieces, and they're all grey, so there will be lots of painting. I suspect the business will get a name change as well.

Performed an interesting experiment today...

I have a client who wants to have vinyl wraps made for a fleet of service vehicles and having gotten approval on some of the shots through a proofing process, I wanted to see how things scale.

Uncropped 1DMkIV file (16MB) -> 16-bit Tiff (90MB) -> Enlarge by 150% (214MB +/-)

I just used my Canon 9000 and without changing anything but the scale of the image yields:
Print 12 X 18 of entire scene = 416dpi
Print 12 x 18 of 400% crop from center = 75dpi

12 x 18 full frame is wicked sharp at arms length
12 x 18 400% is amazingly good if you back up 400%

So, I figure this image on the side of a truck going past you in traffic at 5-10' away will look mighty good even at 8-9' in length!

Interesting! Just this past Saturday I was talking to a friend who is looking into getting his work trailers vinyl wrapped. For his duct cleaning trailer he wants some before/after pictures of what they do. Not sure how big the actual pictures will be, but they would be several feet across, particularly if they are on the side of the trailer.

Well it's been an interesting, yet boring, day at work.

Boring because we had very little work come in. Interesting because of all the changes that have happened.

Just recently one of the truck apprentices, Stew, turned in his notification. Normal week or two weeks notice. And ever since he turned it in he's been throwing an attitude around. Showing up only wearing running shoes, not showing up at all, giving lip to management, and being his normal bully-type self. Well today he mouthed off to the vice president and got fired on the spot. We watched him pack up his stuff just after 9 this morning.

Since he had given notice there was an obvious position opening in the truck shop. One of the lube techs I work with, Joe, applied for it. At the end of today he had a meeting with the managers and he starts there on Monday. So now we have an open position that will need to be filled quickly.

Kevin, the other lube tech, had asked about getting a raise and getting signed up for an apprenticeship. Today he had a meeting with the managers and got both. He'll still be in the shop with me but will now be getting more advanced work.

Beginning in May I will probably be working Saturdays :( Hopefully we will be getting on a rotation so I don't have to work them all.

All of this means that the boss will finally have to step up and start training Kevin and I on the computer system. The last time our District Manager was in he told our manager that he must get me trained on the computer, and that he would be back in a month to check in. Well, he called yesterday and he will be in next Wednesday. So far, I have not had a shred of training. I have figured out how to write simple work orders simply by watching others do them, but there's a lot more I need to learn.

Fun times.

The rain is fine for now, but it's also helping the grass grow, and once it dries out this summer, it'll be a taller, bigger problem. Grass grows like crazy with this alternating sunshine and rain we've been having.

Last year I bought a new handheld Garmin GPS receiver. A couple months ago I realized I hadn't seen it in a while. I've been searching for it ever since. I emptied every drawer in the computer's desk. I searched behind all the furniture, wondering if one of the cats dragged it away. I checked the glove compartment, center console and under the seats in the car. I even looked through my luggage and my dog's backpack because the last time I could remember seeing it was in December of last year when my dog and I went on a trip up north.

Then, suddenly this morning I remembered putting it in my camera backpack with the 10D and 40D. I checked there, and sure enough... There it was! Whew! I was about ready to give it up for lost and buy a new one again.

Of course, that only reminded me that the reason I didn't know where it was sooner is because I haven't opened my camera backpack since December... :o:o:o I've taken a grand total of seven photos so far this year. All were with the G12, and four of those were two days ago.

Oh, I am SO overdue for a trip somewhere with the cameras again. (And the dog...)

On an unrelated note.. I think I'm getting commissioned for a relatively large canvas.

So go.

I have a drawer for my GPSes. Makes things much easier to deal with. Also drawers for batteries, chargers, flash units, cards, . . .

GPS? what's a GPS? I use google map or mapquest and write it on a piece of paper because my printer was broken FOREVER... I have a new printer now, but I still write down the directions by force of habit....

Mat!! How the heck have you been? I'm heading up your way tomorrow. I was just in the mood to drive 500 miles before lunch, and San Mateo seemed the ideal choice. I'll be close enough to you to wave, and I promise to do so.

You'll have to head a bit further north now...I'm living in Seattle at the moment. I decided for a life change (at least a temporary one) and joined the Coast Guard!

That's quite a lifestyle change. You're right, though, I'll be about 800 miles short of Seattle. Maybe next time.

Still, it's good to see you, and those are some great shots.

So go.

I will be traveling up north again in a few weeks, but I'm going to try to squeeze in a day trip or two somewhere in the meantime, as well.

I have a drawer for my GPSes. Makes things much easier to deal with. Also drawers for batteries, chargers, flash units, cards, . . .

The main reason I bought this GPS was because my older hand-held didn't save to a gpx track file. I wanted to start geotagging my photos, so I picked up a new one that's a bit more modern. And, since it was for use with the camera, it just made sense to me at the time to keep it with the camera... Unfortunately, I forgot about that little fact and thought I'd lost it...

Thanks Tom, it was an amazing experience. Not sure how long I am going to stick with the Coast Guard. I enjoy it, but I still want to make photography my main career. It's nice to be back on POTN. I didn't realize how much I had missed it until recently.

An honorable profession. Being an old Navy guy who's seen his share of bad weather, I have a lot of respect for the Coast Guard and the way they go out to perform rescues and humanitarian missions in the worst weather imaginable. Somehow, I just can't imagine jumping out of a helicopter in the middle of a Bering Sea storm to rescue a fisherman, but they do it...

The Bering Sea isn't THAT bad :p I did my survival swim in Dutch Harbor in December haha...That was interesting to say the least! The really fun part of our 8 month deployment was getting to the North Pole! Wasn't cold either, 20 degrees and sunny all day. I wore my sunglasses up to watch at midnight!

It was fun, lot's of work though. Our ship supports various scientific institutes, and that mission was 2 months long (the whole deployment ended up being 8 months, which for a ship our size is a long time) But I had a great time. Had pictures published in all the major news papers, I have met 3 senators because of our mission. Ridden in a helicopter to scout a path for us to follow through the ice (on our Nome Tanker Escort Mission) Driven on the Bering Sea (suck it Ice Road Truckers!) Saw Russia AND the United States as well as today and tomorrow ALL at the same time, taken pictures in -50 degree weather, been all over Alaska, oh...and I got paid to do all of this!
