Well everyday is psyco day but Tuesdays are special. It's psyco day with torture thrown in.

Also, it's the day they let all the idiots come out to play. Handling one or two at a time is normal. Getting 4~7 of them into one room where each get to compete to see who is the biggest a$$hole is a special treat.

Not sure the UP E-units are quite as pretty as the NS F-units.

They're not. The yellow paint doesn't look good on anything...

The E-units got progressively boxier as they modified and upgraded them. The shovel-nose design gradually morphed into what eventually became the F-units...

Talking about making something ugly....

The very first Santa Fe road passenger diesels were built by EMC (later, EMD), and put on the Super Chief during its first year of operation. These were essentially box cabs, but their primary purpose was to give Santa Fe experience with diesels while they waited for the first deliveries of E1's the following year. They weren't pretty, but had a generally utilitarian look to them that seemed right for the day. Later, some genius got the idea of putting a higher cab on them, trying to make it look a little like the E-units that were starting to populate the railroad. It was hideous.

About halfway down this page, there's a photo of the original, and below it, a photo of the modified unit. Actually, that page contains a pretty good history of that engine. If you have any interest at all, it's a good read.

That was interesting... Those early diesels were certainly odd looking.

Then there was Santa Fe's last (I believe) passenger diesel, the FP-45. What a monster...

I would recommend you rent a decent camera for the shoot. Be it a 7D, 5Dii or even a 5Diii now.

70-200 is good, nifty 50 decent...perhaps something even wider too would be great - 24II is fantastic, or 35L would be good to rent too.

It isn't easy changing lenses with doors off - probably a bit easier with the windows off...

Harm

oh, and since my time up in the skies, AV/TV mode will mean you get plenty of keepers - just in case you need to keep your shutter speed fast enough to minimise and blurring :D!

I did some work for an attorney/friend some years ago, and a lot of the work was digital accident scene reconstructions. There was a very serious accident in the Vacaville area some years ago, and we needed some aerial photos of the area for computer mapping in the simulation.

He tried to rent a helicopter in the area, but there were none to be had, so he ended up finding a guy with a Citabria (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.amerchampionaircraft.com/NewAircraft/Aurora/Aurora2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.amerchampionaircraft.com/NewAircraft/Aurora/Aurora.html&h=333&w=800&sz=90&tbnid=TTM4DnA1EBAUGM:&tbnh=50&tbnw=120&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dcitabria%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=citabria&docid=we5vvIw2qPGLlM&sa=X&ei=d76NT9ukCaSdiAL-ibXKCA&ved=0CFcQ9QEwAQ&dur=575) with the passenger-side door and window removed who flew him around. The pictures didn't turn out that well, but he had a great time.

When I went flying I tried the 50mm 1.8 but the pictures did not turn out well. All the ones I took with my 18-55 IS turned out great. The image stabilization was the saving grace. Even with the shutter speed up there was just enough vibration from the plane to show up. 50mm was too long for my liking as well.

Several years ago I did some aerial shots from the open cockpit of a Stearman bi-plane with my 20D and a non-stabilized Tamron 28-75. I was quite pleased with the results. An IS lens will just improve your chances of a sharp image.

If the doors or windows on the plane are going to be open, then remove the lens hood and don't rest the camera on any part of the aircraft. Hand holding will do just fine.

Beautimous shots, Jon!!

Here are a couple more from Sunday.
This is another shot of my favorite steam engine ever. I love this little guy, probably because I've ridden more miles behind it than just about any other engine on earth. There's no quit in it, either. There are some very steep grades on the line, some as steep as 8%, and this engine can handle it all quite handily. It's almost half the weight of the #7 Shay, but who cares? Shays are boring. BTW, this engine has been both standard gauge and narrow gauge in its lifetime. The RC&BTNGRR is a 3-foot narrow-gauge line.

Living close to the ocean is apparently not such a good thing.
http://www.pbase.com/grumpus/image/142751054/original.jpg
When I arrived, I heard this little guy making quite a racket. They used it to pull the two steam engines out of the shed so they could steam up in the open air. Sorry about the low branch, but I don't think they would have appreciated me pruning their vegetation.

Whoa....who says the 40D sucks? It is a more than capable camera. You don't need to rent anything. Seriously, you have ample gear to get plenty of decent shots. Keep working with and learning the ins and outs of your current gear. It is more than capable of producing stellar images.

Popcorn is a bad word around here. One day, someone burnt popcorn in a kitchenette near our company's founder's desk. He saw it, ran in and tried to diffuse the situation. Then, he asked who left the popcorn there, going as far as to ask over the loudspeaker 'whoever left popcorn here, please come talk to me'. The person never did, so he banned popcorn (and I feel, with good reason..)

I really hope these batteries were the brand new ones. They appear to be taking forever to charge (I've topped off two pairs since I got to work about three hours ago, this pair is still in single-blinky mode). It is possible these were brand new and never charged, as I effectively never used the brand new battery that came with my 5D2 (or the spare I bought with it).

Six batteries should be enough for a 5D2/7D to shoot a wedding on Friday, right?

best smell good popcorn
worst smell burnt popcornPopcorn is high on my list of best smells but not tops. I would have to go with baking bread ir baking cinnamon bread as higher on the list. Grilling a steak as well.

Burnt popcorn is pretty high on my worst smell list but again not #1. That honor goes to burnt eggs. A former room mate left her eggs boil too long and all the water evaporated. The eggs exploded and burnt in the pan. Lots of hydrogen sulfide.

But the worst has to be surstromming <sp?> It's fermented herring. It actually tasts pretty good but it will give stinky kimchee a run for it's money. Most stinky.

Shouldn't matter. I'm going in power saving mode; replay off, no LV (ceremony's at a hotel, but the one in May is not only catholic but at my parish, so I kind of have to be on my best behavior). I've thought of bringing the 5Dc as well, but I really don't want to carry 3 bodies around with me. I'm thinking I'll get through most of my portraits, etc on one set of batteries, and the ceremony will likely mostly be 7D/70-200 so it'll be somewhat evenly balanced out.

The other night, I was popping about 10-bags of the stuff to make individual little bags for my youngest's classroom... My microwave is in the garage.. (don't ask)... and my husband was coming through there muttering something about it smelling like an Edwards Theatre in his man cave... lol.. ;)

No, I work west of Boston. It's ok, tickets aren't going to be all that hard to come by this year. I could have gone to last night's game and tonite's game for $40 all-in. Kind of glad I passed after last night's beating. Besides, 'friendly Fenway' isn't if you're a larger individual (i.e. me). Dont know what it is, but I dont like having strangers next to me at Fenway - most other places, I'm ok.

I couple years back our neighbor gave us one of these for xmas. BTW, it also does great making kettle corn.

hahaha! We used to have one of those years ago, when we first got married.... I thought it was a novelty item... ;) But we did use it sometimes.... I just always felt bad about the oil we had to use with it...

My mom had one of these "air poppers".... The salt never stuck to the popcorn though, so it was pretty bland... but "oil free"... so healthier! :)

I went to Best Buy to see if I could find an OK deal on CF cards... They only had Sandisk Extreme 16s and Ultra II 4gbs, and the 16gbs were overpriced as expected...

So I did what any wise consumer would do - I asked if they would price match B&H... and they DID.

This may seem minor to some people but I have gone to battle with Best Buy in the past. and historically they have only price matched local brick and mortar stores...

Man, this practice gig I'm doing on Friday is costing me a fortune! $180 in CF cards, another $150 in clothes, $131 for the hotel overnight stay... Man, experience is expensive !

Well I've been done with the interview for awhile, it was only about 1.5 hours. It wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't great. Interviewees always do a wonderful job at picking the worst questions to ask. Pretty much all of them had to be answered with very specific answers dealing with specific situations... it's really hard to find something that fits perfectly.

Ah well, we'll see what happens.

I have to have two of everything at work. All sockets, wrenches, etc I have to have in both metric and SAE. SAE is less common, but there is still plenty of things on even brand new vehicles that are non-metric. Case example: Ford's most common oil drain plugs come in 13mm, 15mm, and 5/8".
