You've had no loss at all Chet? I am working on it myself...slow going I know.

I feel your pain, Chet. I'm about an inch taller than you at 5'7" (I've always claimed to be 5'8", but it's a lie). At my peak, I also weighed 265. That was a couple years ago. I'm down almost 60 pounds, 35 of those since early February.
I attribute part of it to diet. I haven't had a single dessert in that time, and have eliminated just about everything I really enjoy. We've been eating lots of Subway veggie sandwiches, and I've taught myself to enjoy eating fish.
For some reason, the weight has come off. In the meantime, Lois has not really lost much weight, but she has redistributed things a bit. She's smaller, especially through her midsection, but has only lost about 5 lbs.
The main thing is, we now have eliminated all snacks from the house. We have removed all temptation. We have a fruit bowl that we keep stocked for those moments when we just can't go another minute without eating something.
Food is a bit like smoking. The longer you stay away from it, the less tempting it is. Unfortunately, also like smoking, it's very easy to fall off the wagon.

Working on losing weight is frustrating. Especially if you're working out - you're replacing lighter weight fat mass with heavier muscle mass. So when you step on the scales, nothing changes.
I'm getting back into my training program this summer with my favorite coach. He firmly believes that when you start a conditioning/weight loss program you should not look at a scale for 4 weeks. At the end of 4 weeks, before you step on the scales, he makes you ask yourself: "Do you feel better?"
I've found it to be good advice. But it sounds like you've already had too much advice. We can compare notes after the 4th of July.

Trying to lose weight and am getting frustrated. Seems like everything I'm trying is not producing results. I go to 2 gyms, have a personal trainer that I work out with 2-3 times a week, and I don't eat at fast food restaurants every day anymore. At my current weight of 265 at 5'6" the weight should be coming down. I keep getting great advice, but nothing appears to be working. It's so frustrating. I have been a yoyo'er for pretty much my whole life. I have yet to discover a diet that is long term sustainable and keeps my weight down. I'm trying something a bit different right now and it seems to be working. It's basically eating a modified paleo diet, that is meats, lots of veggies and fruits. Nothing white, no rice, no potatoes, no bread. Oh, and lots of exercise.

Back in 2002 I got seriously into hiking and mountain climbing and over the course of a year or so went from 245 pounds down to 165. But, then I started gaining weight again even though I was still exercising like a maniac. I eventually topped out around 190 or so, but it was driving me up a wall. I couldn't figure out why my weight was going the wrong direction until someone explained that to me. I was increasing my muscle mass.
Of course, then several years later I got injured and couldn't hike for several months, which brought back the laziness, and all that fat came back. And then some... :(

we tend to cook everything from scratch, every night or so. Cuts out all the lardy, sugary crap. we don't have any soft drinks in the house (just beers, wine and juices)... oh and no fast foods. we can then eat all the crap we want and not gain weight. It all tastes delicious too...
I just feel like crap because I haven't worked out, but once back into that, I'll be good again :D
So keep at it, Chet!

Peek....
Diet is huge! Especially as we get older and our metabolism changes and our daily requirement becomes less... Putting on some lean muscle mass will help tons towards increasing your metabolism. Dont' waste a ton of time doing cardio.. Just hit the weights and go as heavy as you can and keep at it... 30 minutes of cardio after your lifting session is plenty for starting.
Try to eat food as natural/wholesome as possible and allow yourself one cheat meal a week to eat anything that you have been craving. Also try and take a protien shake twice a day..(just whey protien isolate, no added junk except a flavor) something in the amino acids really helps the body to metabolize stuff. And drink tons of water.. it keeps things moving, and is great for so many different aspects of over all fitness/health.
Indugle in inspirational quotes from fitness sites..... I love to post them on my Facebook page for daily inspiration. :) blah blah blah... https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Krsity
I hear ya though.. I work my butt off at the gym for little gains.. lol... I'm now starting to push it a little harder, and I know that changes in my diet are the only thing holding me back from getting to where I'd like to land.... easier said than done, but I'm surrounding myself with positive influences.... lol..

Yeah... the only way to really change the body is to train the muscle.. cardio is good for the heart and all... and for buring a little extra fat... but I'd steer more towards a higher intensity workout where you might do box jumps, or jump rope, squat jumps, anything that gets your heart rate up... in between your lifting sets... it's brutal, but you sweat the entire time...
Glad your wife is seeing positive results.. it's such an awesome mental boost too! :)

I really should get a gym membership again. Problem is I want access to a pool with the membership and that comes at a much higher price. Will probably look more seriously at it in the fall, right now working full time and playing ball two nights a week is keeping me worn out. And my job is quite physical with a lot of lifting involved. I have gained weight since I started here, but I know for sure I've been building muscle again, especially in my arms since my shirt sleeves fit tighter now.

I assume the last three words are supposed to be "God only knows", but I kinda like it the way it is. That may be my new catch phrase for when I just have no idea...
"What are you going to do tomorrow?"
"God wheat was!"

Yup... protein is huge... especially if you are cutting calories. You want to make sure to take in enough protein so that your body doesn't start taking lean body mass for energy... having the extra protein in the diet really helps to sustain the muscle. :)

That's one of the big problems with all the nutrional info posted on everything... Sugars, carbs, fats, etc aren't all created equal. People get too caught up in counting how many grams of whatever they are eating, when that's really not what eating healthy is about.

You shouldn't be too hungry Chet.. eat some broccoli...
There are lots of healthy veggies that can fill you up. Make sure you eat enough protein foods as they will stay in your system longer and help keep you from feeling hungry..... eat smaller meals every 4 hours... no more than 4 hours between snacks, that will help too. :) and DRINK TONS OF WATER! TONS!

Berries are the best fruit to eat. Grapes probably are the worst for sugars.. I eat lots of berries but very little of apple, orange and that type of fruit.
If you ask the PALO crowd... sugar is really to be limited I have a good article about it.. I'll link it up tonight when I can put my finger on it... it makes sense, once you digest the information... ;)

Pizza is actually very healthy. Actually most foods are just fine if you don't eat the whole bag, box, can, container or whatever it comes in... My Kristy is a WW Lifer and they put no restrictions on what you can eat. They simply assign point values to foods and if you want to devour all your daily points in one Fudge Sundae, hey, go nuts! You just won't be able to eat anything else today... ;)

What am I looking at there? Besides some broken part(s).
Now that I know NOTHING about this photo.... I can say... that looks a little "broken"... lol.. how the heck does that happen? lol.. ;)
Did the caliper piston steel actually break like that? Holy cat biscuits batman! I've seen rotors disintegrate and break pads weld to rotors, but never that one.
Was that guy really using the pistons to stop a truck?
Ok, explanation time. This was on a 2009 F-250 Super Duty with 43,000 kms on it. These trucks are well known for the brake calipers, pads, and sliders seizing up.
This is a picture of the driver's side, that I didn't take apart.

The caliper (blue) sits over top of the brake pads (yellow) which are sitting in the bracket (green) and get squeezed against the rotor (purple).
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7222/7353076880_40acb99827_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/43180760@N07/7353076880/)

This photo shows the brake pads in the bracket without the caliper in place. The pads are supposed to be able to slide in the bracket as they get squeezed against the rotor and released. Not getting the brakes serviced often enough leads to the pads rusting in place and not being able to move.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8163/7351909962_29aee8e979_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/43180760@N07/7351909962/)

Ok, so this picture again. This is the caliper turned upside down. Those two round parts are the pistons. When you step on the brake pedal brake fluid gets pushed out of the master cylinder, through the brake lines, and into the caliper behind these pistons. The pistons are forced outwards against one of the brake pads. Pushing against one brake pad makes the caliper move sideways and the other side of it (the three 'fingers') pull against the other pad. So the brake pads are squeezed against the rotor by the caliper. When you take your foot off the brake, the pressure on the brake fluid is released and the pistons are supposed to pull back into the caliper a little bit, releasing the pressure on the pads.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7089/7166596133_21a1a033f0_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/43180760@N07/7166596133/)
That Sucks (http://www.flickr.com/photos/43180760@N07/7166596133/) by Scrappper (http://www.flickr.com/people/43180760@N07/), on Flickr
The problem here, is that those brake pads seized into the bracket so they wouldn't back away from the rotor properly. This creates a lot of heat as they constantly are touching the rotor as you're driving down the road. Too much heat and the pistons start to seize up in the caliper. The pistons don't move back like they're supposed to and end up keeping pressure on the pads, which creates more heat as the pads are held against the rotors. It's a problem that just compounds.
In this set up, the caliper pistons are made out of ceramic. Lightweight and strong, but they will crack and crumble when exposed to excessive heat levels for long periods of time. This customer came in to get new pads and rotors put on because they were worn down. When I went to take the caliper off I could not squeeze the pistons back into the caliper. When I tried to pry the caliper off, the pistons disintegrated. The only way to fix this is to put new calipers, pads, and rotors on and clean up the bracket and slide pins so everything moves freely.

[BORING BICYCLE TALK] We did our current morning ritual, and it's becoming apparent that this exercise thing is starting to work. We have a set route we take on the bike that's exactly 3.58 miles. I do it twice, the first time around with Lois, and then by myself. In the last week since Lois has been riding, her times for the same route have dropped from over 30 minutes, to just about 27. I let her set her own pace, and don't try to rush her at all. My own time for the second lap has dropped from around 17 1/2 minutes to 16 minutes flat in just the last week. [/BORING BICYCLE TALK]

'morning Chief. Looks like you and Lois have a nice routine going.
I'd be really hesitant to go riding a bike around here in the early mornings. The roads are too narrow and there are too many unlicensed folks going to work in the vineyards around here that time of day. Yesterday morning we had a retired Professor out for his morning bike ride and he was run over by a hit and run Dodge pickup driver. It doesn't look like he will make it.

I'm sorry to hear about the college professor. I can't imagine what a waste that sort of thing is. The man worked hard all his life, and probably though he didn't have a care in the world. Sad. I hope they get the owner of that Dodge truck. It's amazing how many of those car/truck vs. bicyclist accidents involve alcohol.
We also had a bicycle fatality (http://www.mydesert.com/article/20120603/NEWS0804/120602011/Bicyclist-killed-Indian-Wells-identified-driver-arrested) here a few days ago, but it wasn't in a gated community. It was on a city street. Where we ride, it's completely restricted access, and there isn't any traffic to speak of. Add to that the time of day, and the fact that half the houses are second/vacation homes and are unoccupied this time of year, so it's not unusual to go the entire ride without encountering a single vehicle (except for the guys out mowing the golf course).
*sigh*

I haven't had to deal with too much of the heat on the morning rides. It's very comfortable at 5:30am. The evening rides are another matter, but as long as I keep moving forward with enough pace to create a little breeze, that's okay, too. The hottest day I've ridden so far was 109°a couple weeks ago. Even that was bearable, although the sun was already low in the sky. I'm not sure I'd be quite that enthusiastic in the middle of the day with the sun directly overhead.

Great job Mel.
I went spinning today, 1st time in 4 years. Forgot how much of a work out it was. 35 minutes in my butt went numb along with part of my leg and foot. So I had to get off the seat for the last 10 minutes to get through it. Not sure yet what wasn't adjusted right on my seat, maybe next weekend I'll figure it out.
After we were done (Becca joined me) she wanted to go in the pool with the kids. I said we need to eat, as I only had a protein shake before the 8:15 class. We get to a restaurant and I thought I was going to heave, started fighting the urge to purge. I had 4 eggs, went home and crashed for 3 hours. Really not sure what happened.
I felt bad for Becca as it was her 1st spin class ever, she did pretty well but had a 11am personal training session at our other gym. I guess she survived.

The heater boxes were installed on this end of the switch, but not on the other end. The heater had problems and they hadn't gotten it fixed before the blizzard hit. One train sat on the tracks for several hours waiting for rail crews to come and get the switch to move, but all three crews that were sent out ended up stuck in the ditch or snowdrifts. Eventually the train crew had to go out, dig out the switch, move it so they could get on the main line, and then left it there. For three days every train had to slow down to a crawl to go across this switch and then take the siding to the other end. Eventually a rail-mounted crane with a big blower on it came out and cleaned out the snow. And by that time my neighbour had gotten out with his backhoe and dug a path through the snow to the nearest crew stuck in the snow.

I like A/C all the time.
The A/C compressor on a vehicle only takes 1 hp to run. My truck has enough hp that it doesn't notice when the A/C is on. It also takes more fuel to drive with the windows down than to run the A/C, due to the decrease in the vehicle's aerodynamics. And when I've been at work all day, with no A/C, wearing work boots, long pants, and a work shirt, I want to be as comfy as possible driving home.
At home, we run the A/C all summer, and have no problems keeping the house in the low 70's even when it's hitting triple digits outside. We have a geothermal heat pump here, it's quite cheap to run, so we do.

I was gonna say, Mythbusters pretty much proved that A/C doesn't have very much of an impact on mpg in a modern car...

It sure seems to make a difference in my car.

I'm mostly local (under 40 mph, more like 20) driving. Drag from open windows isn't as big as if I were at 65 mph.
*sigh*

Yeah, the speed makes the difference. I think in their test car it was around 55 where A/C became more efficient.

The A/C compressor doesn't take any more horsepower than the alternator, water pump, or power steering pump. Back in the day when the compressors were huge, heavy, and had a lot of drag on them, they would put a dent in your fuel mileage. But who cared about fuel mileage back then?
Depending on the type of system that is on the car, the compressor doesn't even run the whole time. A cycling clutch system only runs the compressor when the system pressure gets low.

That's the difference. Low speed kills the system. Both engine fans will have to be running at full tilt as well, so there will be a significant load on the alternator as well.

Max speed makes a much bigger impact on mpg.
At 60-65 mph, my 4Runner will get around 22.5-23.5 mpg (higher on level ground.)
When I hit areas with 75mph, my mpg drops to 21.5 or so. West Texas @ 85mph, my mpg will drop to closer to 20 mpg.

A nice balmy 89 here today.
My 4Runner acceleration drops some when I have the A/C going. But then it doesn't have a whole lot of horses to begin with. I can definitely tell when the A/C is on.

Well I know I don't notice when the A/C kicks on on my truck.
High speed is always bad for fuel mileage. Engine RPM has to go higher to get higher speeds once you are in your top gear. Wanna drive fast and still keep fuel in the tank? Buy a vehicle with a 6-speed transmission.

Yeah, if it wasn't for A/C we'd have algae growing on us.

Yep. Anything over 70/21 is much too hot.

Not a problem we have at the museum... We have more trouble with rolling a rail or the gauge spreading on the track in our yard.

I had the same issue with my four cylinder Suzuki SUV. The only way we can tell if the A/C is on in Heather's V-6 Suzuki SUV is the chirp from the fan belt when it starts and the green light on the switch. You can't even tell in my truck. Sometimes I forget it's on until I start getting chilly.
BTW, I passed my Extra examination today. (Tim will know what I'm talking about...)

Thanks...
I think I got the easiest test our VE team had. I had more trouble with the practice test the instructor gave before the "real" exam...

I had more problems with the Advanced test. The Extra came much easier for me.
By the way...this is the problem I was talking about the other day with the Midway A6E display.

You can see where the main gear door is touching the bomb. It makes for a pretty display, but...

I'm not familiar enough with the EA-6B, but look HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A-6E_Intruder_preps_for_launch_aboard_CVN-65.jpg) and you'll see those doors down with an A6E ready to launch.
And even if the door were closed during launch, it would still have to open in order for the mains to retract.

The gear configuration is slightly different between the Prowler and the Intruder. They had to move things a bit on the Prowler to make up for the additional 5 feet of fuselage.
