Nice aeroplane shots, Jay. I didn't follow any of that discussion about Prowlers, bombs, and doors, but the photos were (predictably) excellent.

Off for a quick dish of yogurt and Cheerios, then off for my bike ride.

See you later.

Good morning all. I don't think Zep would have minded that comment with that pic. ;) I'm back to wiring and stuff. Got the housing inspection next Saturday and still have some stuff to finish. I really cleaned up the breaker box last night. Probably took 3~4 feet if wire out of it. in little bits. Some was me as I hadn't settled on which breaker I wanted to use so I left in lots of extra, but some was the original wiring. The guy who originally wired our house was related to Rube Goldberg I think.

I had more problems with the Advanced test. The Extra came much easier for me.

By the way...this is the problem I was talking about the other day with the Midway A6E display.

http://tjb.smugmug.com/Aviation-Space/Misc/i-BHCPCRZ/0/O/DSCF0626.jpg

You can see where the main gear door is touching the bomb. It makes for a pretty display, but...

Interesting... Is it just the Midway's display or did they not carry a bomb in that location because of that? And I love the rag in the intake...

Wait....bring back the Prowler!

The Prowler airframes are getting a little long in the tooth. The new F/A-18G Growler is coming along nicely. It won't be long before F-18 variants are doing all of the jobs on carriers, although I don't think it will make a very good COD...

... And I love the rag in the intake......Rags and airplanes don't mix. On a trip back from the Bahamas we lost power on our Cherokee 6 and ended up dead sticking it into Peotone. It's the event that convinced my dad to go twin. It turned out to be a rag in the wing tank that got sucked into the selector valve jamming it.

A rag in the wing tank? Was it from the fueling in the Bahama's? Good thing you weren't over open water, 30 miles from the beach!

Yikes!! It sounds like you were lucky to walk away from that one.I was a kid at the time, probably 12~14 or so. My dad, the pilot, remained cool and calm the entire time. I was never nervous and had total confidence in him. Years later he admitted that it was the second scariest
airplane event he ever had and he was pumped full of adrenalin.

Prom tonight!!

My church is having a prom for all the high school kids. The group of them is split up between several different high schools in the area so they didn't get to go to their proms together. So tonight is for them to be together. I was asked to come and do group portraits as they come in. There is going to be a big white lattice thing with balloons all over it for the background. Hopefully they put it in a decent place for taking pictures. I have a 580 EXII, but it's going to be camera mounted. Going to go with bouncing off the ceiling and using my home made bounce thing that consists of an 8 inch piece of white card stock rubber banded to the flash. Looks pretty cheap, but it seems to work decently. Just haven't tried to use it with big groups yet.

Examples of my cheap flash solution:

Opinions on Cactus V5's?
They look pretty simple and compact. The ability to use it as a wireless trigger is appealing, so is the price.

Card stock is what I use, and it does seem to work well. It does get a little frustrating trying to switch between landscape and portrait. I have to slide the card around the flash head each time while trying not to pinch the rubber bands. A flash bracket would be a very useful item.

The pictures seem to look good on camera, I'll download them tomorrow after work.

There was a noink shooter there as well. He said he'd only been into photography for about a year and just got his flash two days ago. It was funny watching him try to bounce his flash. Had the diffuser panel on the whole time, started out with it aimed straight up with nothing to bounce it forward, and then at some point he started aiming his flash backwards over his head. Not sure why he was doing that. The room has a nice white ceiling but the walls are bright blue. Anyways, he had to ditch the flash eventually. Heard him telling his girl friend that it was overheating, I figure he probably killed the batteries.

Good morning, Omar, J.J., and Crissa.

I just finished my 5:30am morning ride. It's interesting to see the effect of a little wind on performance. I did my 5-mile loop, which I've done as quickly as 22:00 in the past. Today, there was a persistent breeze blowing from west to east, and that equates to a headwind on the uphill legs. Understand, 'uphill' is still essentially flat, with an overall rise of maybe 40 ft in a mile. Anyway, the wind was at my back on the downhill leg, and I did see some good speed with that little bit of help, but sure felt it going the other direction. It slowed me down by about 2 mph, and added about two minutes to the overall trip.

Lois skipped her ride this morning. She is having some back pain, and I'm a bit concerned that because of where it is, and how it's acting, there is a possibility it could be a reoccurrence of shingles. She had an attack just before our last trip to England, and soldiered through with it, but was miserable much of the time. Of course she won't go to a doctor, and that just adds to the frustration.

However, we can sell it on our own if we wish. I have already had 2 offers from folks in the neighborhood that know people that want to move into our subdivision. It's a rather unique place. Sort of like a piece of Wisconsin in the middle of suburbia. Plus, we are a serious party neighborhood. :)

Very few companies actually 'buy' properties from employees being transferred. They hire a third-party firm to handle it all. I worked in that business for a while, and did reasonably well, but finally determined that corporate sellers are generally not easy to deal with. They are strictly bottom-line oriented, and when they make mistakes, expect others to make up for their own error. I'm much happier dealing with emotional buyers and sellers directly. They are inclined to eventually do the right thing because they're dealing with their own money. Some flunky in a relocation firm has 'guidelines', whether they're realistic or not. They're usually not authorized to make the decisions that are necessary, at least not in a timely manner. Also, they tend to flood the transaction with CYA documents generated by their legal departments.

Knowing what I do, I would probably never purchase a home from a relocation company, but that's not to suggest they don't provide a valuable and necessary service. I just happen to think the buyer is at a distinct disadvantage by not having a huge legal department to make sure he is as well-protected as the relo company.

She gets it from her mother. She had a potentially treatable condition, but said nothing to anyone until she was literally dying. I don't know if it's fear, cynicism, or what, but even the suggestion of going to the doctor will get me in lots of trouble. The irony is, after suffering with the shingles for several days last year, she finally went to the urgent care center, and the doctor actually gave her some relief with pain-killers and an anti-viral prescription for the shingles. I guess we'll just have to wait for her to get that miserable again.

It is very frustrating Chief. The irony of it all. If i had something wrong she suggests i should go get it checked out! I am holding back but one of these days i will tell her that refusal of going to the doctor is terribly selfish because she might be suffering but your significant other suffers just as much watching you choose to be in pain.

It would so be worth the trip, though. Their #6 is one of the last Shays ever built, and weighs over 160 tons. It is a monster!! According to published information, it was only about 5 years old when it was retired by the Western Maryland RR, which means the engine is virtually brand new compared to other geared engines, most of which had long, hard lives. It is a pristine example of the high-water mark in geared locomotive technology. I'd love to see it someday.

I think the stuff had been in there for six weeks or more...

She made spaghetti with a sausage sauce... Yummy.

The 6 week old stuff sounds like a penicillin factory - a real growth industry. ;)

The spaghetti sounds good. My wife has me on a "meatless Monday" thing.

John - by the way we have a contact with ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers at 02:25 PDT It's a NE to SW pass, so you'll be able hear it at about 2:30. 145.800 downlink, he'll be talking to students at a Dutch Space Museum.

If you're up at that time, crank on the radio.

I've yet to see the #6 in operation. Everyone says it is a sight to behold.

Congratulation!! 30 years is a biggie!!

I have 50 years of anniversary present-buying under my belt, and while I suspect every woman is different, the things that stand out in my memory usually didn't involve 'things'. My wife has been far more impressed by experiences.....romantic experiences to be precise. A nice dinner, flowers, etc..

The one possible exception: jewelry. These days, however, that's no longer an option with our current state of finances, so a special dinner at her favorite restaurant, or a day trip to somewhere new (but special) brings her great happiness.

Flowers are always nice, but to be honest, they have more impact when they're not tied to a specific event. I'll occasionally stop and pick up some flowers just on a lark. It rarely fails to generate tears of happiness.

I don't claim to understand women, least of all my own wife. I do have the benefit of 50 years of trial and error, so I know what works with her.

LOL, my wife has told me to never get flowers for any sort of gift. Flowers would be a slap in the face to her. Do something romantic. I usually strip down to my tidy whities and do a special dance for her with some soothing Marilyn Manson tune serenading her in the background. It's ok to get a little naughty, maybe rub barbecue sauce all over your chest and write her name in it. Make it special, make it about her.

One more day. And my India team goes out with a bang. I have been working with these guys for weeks on supporting the software once it's released. What do they do? Drop a bombshell at a operations review meeting attended by maybe 50 people stating that they need all this hardware to do their job. Just last week I met with them twice and all was perfect, not even a hint that new hardware is needed. I hate those guys. They are 90% of my frustration.

You guys are on a roll this morning.

Heather and I will be married 12 years next month. I don't think we'll do much because our anniversary is a week after her brother's stateside wedding (he got married in China in January) and Heather is coordinating the whole thing. We may go out to dinner or something...

Experience must count for something.

The gifts I've given Lois over the years are interesting. It's almost an inverse quality; the things I found most interesting were the things she obviously liked least. I bought her a very fancy hair dryer early in our marriage, and she darned near threw it at me. Jewelry was always a big hit, but not if I picked it out by myself. The only way to do that was to take her shopping, and let her pick it out herself. I remember another time (although it was Christmas, not our anniversary) I bought her a VERY expensive pair of diamond earrings. These things we really magnificent. She thought they were ostentatious, and made me take them back. She bought an ostentatious cocktail ring with the money. I just pick the wrong form of ostentation.

Ah yes, keeping "Momma Happy" I'll shop for gifts for Christmas but Birthdays are usually a case of "Have fun shopping and I'll see you back here before we go out for a nice dinner." Anniversaries are very similar.

We do have one fun ritual though. Each year, on or around our anniversary, we go to the Swarovski store and pick out a small crystal figure that ties to some significant event from the previous year. We bought a small plane in 2004 when I got my pilot''s license. Last year we bought a small Seal because we'd been to Sea World, etc... It's a fun exercise and it's fun to collect little things that have meaning!

Great idea! We used to do this with Disney snow globes. We would buy 1 or 2 a year on special occasions, and enjoy them. They were all proudly displayed on a glass shelving unit in our rumpus room that used to be our pseudo office. Well anyhow, one day the shelving unit got bumped and the top shelf collapsed into the 2nd shelf that took out the 3rd shelf and at least 7 snow globes.

The moral of this story is simple, we don't collect snow globes anymore. I think we still have 5 in which the globe itself hadn't broken and the small pieces that came off could be glued back on.

Sounds like fun! We are planning to take the girls in the fall. My youngest has never been, and my oldest was only 4 on her first trip. My husband dreads going.. it's like his worst nightmare.... haha.. I think we'll skip the plush accomodations though, and sleep over at my sister's house in Huntington Beach, and add in a beach day, and a bonfire at night... we love that part. :)
