Good news. It was just a bad valve, I'm thinking it's the idle control valve he was talking about, it has been idling a bit high so that makes sense. Supposedly it's a quick repair, and under warranty. So that's good.

Also I guess one guy from HR, my boss and his boss are working on something for me dealing sit my demotion, err I mean raise. So we'll see what happens.

Idle Air Control valve is usually really easy to change. The one on my truck would literally take only 3 minutes to change, but it is a very important little gizmo!

Good news on the car, Nick. My car is badly in need of work, and it's going to be expensive. It needs the 150K-mile service which involves a major labor bill for the tune-up portion, it needs brakes, and I'm sure they'll find a bunch of other things. I'm planning on a couple thousand dollars. It has a terrible miss in it from about 35mph up, and on hills, it feels like it's going to shake itself apart.

It's misfiring again? Thought they just fixed that problem. But of course, they should have replaced all the coils that are hidden when they did the bad one.

*sigh*

When I got the work slip it said something about a air pressure sensor, not a valve. Not exactly sure what that it is they changed then... either way my car is back to idling where it used to be (mid 600's, while lately it's been 750-800+), and I didn't pay anything. So I'm happy.

MAP sensor then. Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. Measures the vacuum in the intake manifold, which relates to engine load/throttle position.

I gotta go with ugly on that one. Might be unique, but it's ugly.

It was actually quite a successful aircraft. It served with the Royal navy from 1953 to 1978. Two of the more unique features of the Gannet were the contra-rotating propellers and the folding wing.

The engine was actually two hot sections side by side, one of which could be shut down to conserve fuel on long patrol flights. Because of low overhead on the hangar decks of post-war British carriers, the wing folded into a "Z" shape instead of folding up as is the case on other carrier aircraft.

Contra-rotating props weren't all that uncommon. Gave 'em a good way to absorb all that horsepower. The Shackleton and the Bear both had them, to name a couple off the top of my head. So did the Pogo (not that that ever went very far).

They all buy something and claim a profit based on an estimate. They never show the item actually selling. Storage wars is the worst. I just discovered a glitch in MapMyRide. Well, it really isn't a glitch, but more of an 'undocumented feature' I'm going to have to be careful of in the future.

I went for a ride this morning, and did my basic 'Spaghetti Bowl' without all the very short side trips. I then added a couple laps around the block at the end of the ride to get the mileage up to 12.7. I did it in 59:09, and figured I'd post it for you all to enjoy and marvel at.

When I tried to save it, though, I kept getting a message, "Can't Save. Try again," with two buttons, Save and Cancel. No matter how many times I hit "save,' I got the same message. I decided to go ahead and cancel; I remembered the important numbers (time and distance). As soon as I did, I saw I was logged on to Dan Hauck's account. The only thing I can think of is that I was on my iPhone looking at one of the rides Dan posted, and was still logged on to his account or something. Anyway, you're just going to have to take my word for it. 12.7 miles in 0:59:09. Best of all, I'm not tired, and my knees aren't hurting at all.

I did develop a 'click' in the left pedal I'm going to have to check on.

Thanks, Tim. I'm a little stoked this morning. It was a good ride. Now I have to track down the click in the pedal. They're new pedals, so I'd be very surprised if the bearings are bad already, but maybe they need to be re-torqued or something. I'll call the store where I bought them before I start tinkering. Maybe they'll just exchange them for me.

Great! The real fun comes when you repeat that ride a few times with strava. It will award you for personal records and even rank you against others if they have done it as well. You can also create your own timed segments, example if you have an incline some where you can make that into a segment, strava will then track it for you every single time. :D

Here is a link to my STRAVA profile Chief. You can add me. Nick is on there as well.

"Reality" television has reached the point where producers are willing to stretch the truth in hopes of coming up with a popular combination. If you look at any reality show, from Survivor (which is really a game show) to the above shows, the underlying principle is how much money is to be made in the end. And if there's a bunch of hate, discontent and drama along the way so much the better...

FlyingPhotog
19th of June 2012 (Tue), 11:54
Auction Hunters on Spike TV is pretty entertaining... The "hosts" are an interesting pair and they actually give at least a little insight into what types of things they look for when the storage unit door goes up.

Of course, they, like every "reality show," cherry pick things. I'm sure those guys get their fare share of losses or break evens and not every storage unit has a Chevelle SS lurking in the back under a tarp or Washington's ivory teeth in a dresser drawer.

At least the guys really do make their living off dead unit auctions. The psychology of bidding is interesting to watch.

Moo...

I don't think that's the case with Auction Hunters. I just think we don't see the "dogs" they end up with (which is probably most of the time.) They are actually bidding against other people and they do show the hosts getting outbid and shut out from time to time.

I do get a kick out of the shows you mention...

"Ok people, today, your task is to build a floating mobile home that must be able to deliver a suitcase-sized weapon of mass destruction across a swamp, through a forest and into a medium-sized city undetected. You'll have six hours to build it and your only tools are a Crescent Wrench, a Screwdriver, three Zip Ties and some Wire. In this scrap heap is your Strontium, Cesium and a healthy supply of lead shielding. Good Luck!"

I just did a little work on the bike. I installed a quick-release seat post clamp, and re-installed the pedals per the bike shop's suggestion. I decided to take it for a test ride, which also gave me a chance to check out Strava for the first time. I logged in a staggering .3 miles, figured out how to upload it, and according to the software, burned 5 calories in the process. I figure just about 200 such trips will burn off the massive ingestion of calories I took in with the burrito bowl from Chipotle Mexican Grill.

I did roughly 12.5 miles this morning, so tonight I went out after supper and did another 7.5 miles just so I could say I did 20 miles today. Needless to say, the evening ride was much slower than the morning's, partly due to tired legs, and also because of the heat. It was about 104° when I left the house, and didn't really cool off much in the 35 or minutes I was riding.

Another reason I make better time in the morning is I'm not interrupted by phone calls. Tonight, I had two phone calls and two text messages I had to reply to.

Jill-of-all-Trades

104 sounds pretty nasty. We hit about 97 in the shade here today, but we were over 50% humidity. First day of a heat wave, really not looking forward to tomorrow.

Belmondo
19th of June 2012 (Tue), 22:48
Believe it or not, Melody, 104 is not too bad for bike riding as long as the sun is low. We have very low humidity, currently about 10%. As long as you maintain forward motion, you stay fairly comfortable. As soon as you stop, you heat up pretty quickly, but by the time it gets uncomfortable, you're indoors with cold glass of lemonade.

BTW, I took the car in today. I suspect by this time tomorrow, I'll be ranting about Lexus service. So far, the only estimate he'll give me is the cost of the diagnostics.. I'm going to be out of pocket almost $200 before I know what all the problems are. He wouldn't hazard a guess.

Jill-of-all-Trades
19th of June 2012 (Tue), 23:12
Yeah, the wet heat here is nasty. Standing indoors, with the garage doors open, with a moderate breeze, I was soaked with sweat. It just doesn't evaporate. The body looses is natural cooling process and it becomes very difficult to keep at a reasonable temperature.

I have freezies at work, and water bottles go in the freezer with them. Today, I also added a spare deodorant to the freezer. Definitely feels nice to apply that when the heat gets intense!

Given I will NEVER use the bag like this... that's a bit absurd. But still, the thing has room! PS I have the attachment straps so the tripod would strap to the bottom of the bag. But I was being lazy, so I just set it on top. :)

This bag really is insane... it has my macbook/charger, gripped 7D, S95, 11-16, 70-200 f4 IS, 28 1.8, 85 1.8, 580EXII, foundation kit + 6-7 filters, plus round filters. Eneloop charger, S95 charger, 7D charger. Remotes, cards, card readers, microfiber cloths, rain cover, gaffers tape, color checker etc etc etc.

OK....just for the hell of it, I walked the same route I rode earlier using Strava instead of the MMR. On the plus side for MMR....it shows distance to two decimal places....Strava only one. On the plus side for Strava, it actually gave very accurate elevations along the route. The basic track says there is zero elevation change, but when you go to the detailed track it shows the elevation going from 2120 at the start of a lap, to 2135 at the first turn with a 2.4% grade.....then back to 2120, climbing to 2138 at the second turn with a 12.6% grade.....each lap is .29 miles with MMR and .3 with Strava. Not sure that it amounts to much, but it does show that it is far from being a flat ride.

Glad you are liking it Dan. What i found out with MMR is that it understates the amount of climbing you do. I am not sure why that is the case (maybe something to do with the algorithms they use?). But good to see you giving it a try. Looking forward to your next comments as you load up some more rides.
