Is there a crop tool in the shape of a circle?

I'm trying to get a perfect circle to paste in another image.

It's impossible freehand or with the magnetic lasso.

any suggestions?

Hold down the SHIFT key while you drag the elliptical marquee. This will make it a perfect circle. Make sure feathering is set to zero or the edges will be soft. Then cut the circle and paste it in the new image.

thanks for the advice.

It creates a circle but it's cutting a white hole in the photo.

Is there a way to crop the image within the border?

I'm trying to crop & copy just the lens from this photo.

then paste it into another photo

Forget about cropping.

Make your circle, then Edit > Copy.

Open the new image, then Edit > Paste.

30 second job.

By the way, if you do ALT+SHIFT when you drag the elliptical marquee, it will make the circle from the center out. Neat trick.

Make sure you are working on the correct layer. If you are not sure, flatten the image before you draw the circle by choosing Layer > Flatten Image. If you have a blank background layer you might be copying from that instead of the image layer.

Also make sure the layer modes are all set to "normal" and not one of the other blend modes. This is for the source image as well as the destination.

You're not inadvertently hitting 'backspace' or 'delete' are you? Those would clear the selection. Simply copying should not.

I can't think of anything else, but the very simple technique I described above works for me, so I have to suggest that you have something configured improperly, or that you are taking unnecessary steps which are causing the hole. Good luck figuring it out!

Thanks for your help Slejhamer!

I finally figured it out.

I needed to right click and choose "make selection".
