View Full Version : So, how about a new Bird sub-forum?

I'm pretty sure we could get better traffic than the Wedding sub-forum. ;)

So, how about a new Bird sub-forum? Pretty please?

I promise, I'll help keep it in order.

Aside from a separate wedding forum, I could see a lot of traffic in a portrait forum. There are a lot of "how do I shoot a group", "I'm going to shoot my sister's kids' portraits..." and "what lens and setting would be best for an outdoor family shoot" types of questions mixed in the Cornering the Pros and Talk about Photography forums.

I also think a text-only forum for Sports and maybe a few of the other categories that currently reside in the photo sharing forums might also make sense. On the other hand, having a dozen new "how to" forums might be a little sensory overload. :D

I did some analysis when something like this came up in an old thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=87975). Nature & Animals is by far the busiest Share forum, almost twice as busy as People which is the next busiest.

Last 30 days (as of the 28th of July) - Number of unique posters, total number of unique posts. total number of replies, total number of views.

Forum Posters Posts Replies Views
Still: 108 156 914 26,610
Nature: 375 989 5,888 97,685
Travel: 262 511 2,972 63,130
People: 300 528 3,862 145,074
Urban: 105 162 936 29,614
Transp: 163 354 2,962 56,772
Macro: 136 392 2,879 59,839
Sports: 146 274 1,730 51,679

A sub-forum for N&A makes sense, but is Birds correct? It's always seemed that there are more bird pics posted but then again I key on birds.

Isn't that what the glamour forum's for? ;)

I think we have too many photo share categories as it is, i'd not like to see the front page get even longer. As a subforum, sure. If the wedding forum stays this quiet we could toss it and move it all back to corner the pros.

I just checked N & A and page 3 contains posts made 23 hours ago, so that's 63 posts in a day.

38 posts for People, 30 for Sports, 30 for Macro, 33 for Landscapes... N & A is pretty busy.

Not sure. Some of the portraits that I shoot are far from glamourous. :D

Subforum please :)
The list is already too long.

Are we talking about a subforum for posting photos of birds or a subforum for talking about how to get the perfect photos of the birds like the wedding forum is about how and what to do when shooting a wedding?

My initial thought is that we are talking about a talk-subforum (since this topic is posted in cornering the pro's) and then it should probably cover more than just how to shoot birds. It should also cover things like how to shoot animals in a zoo in a way so it is not so obvious that it was shot i the zoo and things like that. Or how to get those awesome shots IanD got of owls.

I have no numbers like Scottes but if a subdivision of nature & animals is in question I would rather divide it in two, one for nature and one for animals rather than for specfic animals. Otherwise we could quickly end up with requests for more subforums, I for one would then like one for big cats, I think Scottes would be in favor of one for Wolves and so on.

I rather suspect "Wedding" is seeing relatively low traffic because November's not when very many June brides are desperately scrabbling to find any photographer they can because the local specialist is booked up already or charges more than they (or papa) are willing to pay. Look for a lot more action come (Northern Hemisphere) spring.

Breaking it up into two forum, Animals and another for Nature, makes sense for the title. But that might only an 80-20 split. N&A and a Birds sub-forum might be closer to 60-40. (A guess, but a lot of bird pics get posted. It would be a manual task to count them though...)

And checking reent numbers shows that People is rather close to N&A. The numbers I posted above are 5 or 6 months old.

I posted it in the Pro forum by mistake..

My intention was to ask for a Bird sub-forum as a means to help organize the huge quantity of posts. I just think there's too much happening in N&A to truly be able to read & respond properly.

In my perfect world - we'd have 3 sub-forums under N&A with no posts under N&A itself. The 3 sub-forums would be:

Wild Animals
Wild Birds
Everything else (Captive/Caged/Zoo/Domesticated/Barnyard)

Or:

A better thing would be an image posting LIMIT. 1 image post per day - max 6 pics in the post. Unlimited replies to other people's posts. Self imposed if the software can't handle it. Posts exceeding the pic count, pic size, or more than 1 per day get deleted. It MIGHT lead to better pics all around.

I'd volunteer to help move the posts too.

As long as we're making changes.... how's about a forum for avian pics?

I'll still volunteer to help out with it, if that helps.

Being discussed as we speak.

It's a very popular idea, and I think there will be an announcement eventually.

I was hoping for a train forum, but it looks I'm going to be frustrated much longer than the folks who want a bird forum.

I'm glad this thread is resurrected. Now i see the bigger picture of the issue. I'm just happy to know it's being discussed by the admins/mods at the moment. :)

I am 100% behind a Bird forum now.. the traffic increase and more to the point,. increase in interest for avian photography definitely supports the argument for it's own forum.

For the record, I'd like to see a bird forum, or any division of N&A that will make the volume there more manageable.

Is there any chance of the photo sharing forums displaying a thumbnail of the first image next to the topic? It works very well at naturescapes and should result in less load on the forum server as it becomes really easy to target the few that are of interest.

But will most like require code changes not just template changes.

In short: no. Thumbnailing (where embedded images must be retrieved to localhost) and queries for getting the thumb there would eat much more resources that hitting next message button and showing thread (cached). We have now 60,000 attachments and embedded images many times that so thumbnailing is not something I would do now.

But I'm thinking of improvements in that area - some day they will be made.

ITS COMING, ITS COMING!!!

From a thread regarding the OTHER forum in the Photo Sharing section:
It is being closed as too slow/unused. All posts in it can be in Urban, Still Life and B&W and other existing forums. When it is removed we'll have room for Birds forum which is desperately needed.

Is a code change required to auto-delete Duckie shots as soon as posted? Pekka/Tommy, can we achieve this via a template?

There is an urgent need for this IMVHO, not just in a new birding section but more particularly in the lens section. While I am against prohibition in most things I do feel this fetishization of the Duckie, and to a lesser degree the twig and Squirrel, is sapping the collective creative impulse and so auto-delete would be of greater service to humanity than the current indulgence.

I know You are just kidding here. Right ?

Why is it so hard to just skip threads that do not interest?

Its the same with the people section and kid shots. I find it totally wrong that some members feel the need to state that the thread contains photos of kids. And the same with photos of ducks, squirrels etc.

But to answer Your question. Yes it would most likely require code change to achieve an auto delete of a subject.

Believe me if it was possible to delete threads automatically we would see much less spam around here. Most is caught quickly but sometimes it takes a while before the mod team spots it and can remove it.

I agree whole heartily. Maybe instead of auto delete which would require rewriting code we could implement a bird sub,sub forum for these type of shots.

We've scheduled that to come right after auto-delete on all posts mentioning lenses other than EF/EF-S-mount or DSLRs with cra^hop factors other than 1.0, 1.3 or 1.6.

Good point, Jon. 1.5X is an automatic ban.

Good point, Jon. 1.5X is an automatic ban.The conditional code allowing posts from the people wanting to abandon that format's what's holding this particular fix up.
