Thunderbolt is amazing. I have a thunderbolt external drive that blows my doors off when I'm backing up wedding files.
Yerp, problem is Thunderbolt drives are rarer and thus tends to be expensive. USB3 is "only" half the theoretical speed, but in most cases works nearly as well due to limitations of read/write speeds of drives.

Well, thunderbolt is just a "portized" PCI-E. Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2 but not faster than USB 3 or E-SATA.
Thunderbolt is twice as fast as USB 3 :

It is not suppose to fall apart at 150K shutters, the shutter rating means 50% of those shutters fail by about 150,000, which means 50% go beyond that.

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Drives. It describes a system where you use multiple hard drives to function as one hard drive. This can protect against hard drive failure (but tends not to protect against user idiocy).
Hot Swap means you can take the drives out and put other ones.
(Both these descriptions are simplified, but you get the point).

Thunderbolt is a fast port. It is essentially a PCI-E slot turned into a port. Apple uses it in their newer products, it's max bandwidth is twice as much as USB3.
See other post about hotswap and RAID.

Hmm.. work hard Jake. I know you hear it from everyone but good grades matter. They don't mean you are necessarily smart or dumb, but when looking at college, grad school, or (first) jobs, people tend to value good grades.

That's exactly it. When you're working under curtain circumstances, redundancy is a must. I'll admit that I fell victim to the overpriced Pegasus R4, but I don't really regret it. I haven't had any issues with it and it looks great! Super quiet and a great build.

My most recently two computer builds I have everything RAID 1. I do not want to lose anything due to hard drive failure. I am glad they were raided, I have had some failures. They're pretty nice from what I have experienced. I usually have 10-15 unedited shoots at a time, so I don't like to carry all those around on my laptop which is my main editor now. The external allows me to backup and only transfer over a couple working shoots at a time. This keeps my machine from getting bogged down and keeps everything in one place, finished or not.

Laptop and external hard drive :p
I can't even imagine how many a sports photographer puts on in a year :p
But that's probably a bit more than I really have shot :lol: in reality it's probably like 40,000 I know that I had 30k+ on the T3i, and I shot about 3,000 in a WEEK on the 7D
yeahh I shot close to 7000 when I was in Japan or about 500 shot s a day. :D

i exported all the photos to a external hard drive. so what do i have to do to get them off my computer?
I would just go to where the files are located on your computer, where ever you put them whenever you download from your memory card, and delete them there. It is kind of annoying to delete in Lightroom.

Get a GDrive with firewire connection, on sale at Best Buy for $88 for 500 gb, move picture libraries of LR, or whole aperture Library...do it now before you run out is space.
i have a 750gb external drive that i put them all on

anybody know how to delete all the photos from lightroom?
uhmmmm... you better save all the metadata first..then delete the whole catalogue.

On LR the images are imported from my camera into picture folder, then I can move all these to the GDrive.

Externals are nice for backup.
Depends on the Mac.Yeah, but even with a Mac Pro you're pretty much limited to 4 drives (you can get 6 on certain models with some modding).
