Wow! Some info. is leaking in the 5D III rumors thread that the ISO improvment is only by 1/2 stop at 3200. That's a big disappointment.

If you buy TWO D800s and duct-tape them together, you can get 36MP stereoscopic images!

Well, I can't even use my old one since it's such a piece of ****. Now, this Gitzo is insane, I'm pretty sure it would last me the next 15 years, easily, that is I take care of it properly ;)

The info that I got didn't say specific type but it's something like this:

The amount of read noise the D800 has at ISO 1000 is same as what the 5D2 has at ISO 100.

I told you guys the 5D2 has a crap DAC...but i didnt think it was THAT BAD!!

Only the 85. But I wanted to take full advantage of the lens, the 200 would also be used for sports. It'll take me a while to save up for it, but, my school has the Nikon 70-200 equivalent of the 70-200 2.8 IS II, so if I don't have the 200 in time I can buy an adapter to use the Nikon.

I'm convinced on the 200, so nothing's going to stop me

If you have a rebel camera go third party. If you have anything higher go canon. It helps balance out the camera with heavier lenses and great for portrait shooting.

Thank you - I decided it would be helpful for portrait shooting. I do have a T1i (and can't even find the original Canon ones for it on Amazon anymore anyhow) and my son will be using it for journalism class. Figured if I got a grip for it it might be easier for him in portrait mode and/or just make it easier for him to figure out in general. So funny - took him out tonight taking pictures and he was so excited. Sadly, he was bouncing all over the place and 99% are out of focus. He might be better off set free in green square mode after all... :(

I hate to admit this, but I turn my camera "wrong" in portrait mode because it feels uncomfortable the other way. I'm trying to break myself of the habit and realized that a grip would 'fix' the problem once and for all. Sadly I either have to wait one extra month or put off the new lens for one extra month - there is no way DH would let me get a grip and the macro at the same time. That's just not a fair request.

Most were out of focus because the shutter speed was too low. I was teaching him about aperture and I think he didn't even listen to that part - just took off and started taking pictures after I set it at f/8 (as I was explaining if you take it below this you'll have less in focus but your shutter speed will go up, etc.). Since it was late afternoon most of his shutter speeds were around 1/200 of a second or less, depending on where he was shooting. The big thing he needs to practice is holding it still and slowing down. It will take some time.

Next question is whether or not to get another flash... I'm sure some of this will be in school and I don't want him taking mine. As it is I'm cringing a little to let him take the camera - so worried he'll do something stupid with it. Granted, when it is important stuff he is usually trustworthy, but still... letting your kids grow up is such a nerve-wracking thing!

Speaking of flashes.. I really should suck it up and buy one.

Since I have to have him competent in a week, I feel better getting him something that is E/TTL compatible. Found a few off brands that are, though. I also debate (I know that everyone really downs them, but they can have some uses) whether or not to get a 270EX II - they are wireless compatible and I can use it for a hairlight later or as another fill flash for various things here and there... Since most of what I foresee him needing flash for are inside things at school, I can't see him really needing a higher guide number very much.

oh - and sucking it up and buying one - I got a 430EX II when I got my 24-105 f/4. Using it only a week made made me decide to switch to off camera flash, add a YN560, etc. etc...

Once you move a flash off camera - wow it gets addictive awful fast. Suddenly your mind is filled with these wonderful images you can create!

Same as 1Dx AF system!!! DAMN!!! I MUST HAVE ONE NOW!!!

High-Performance 61-Point High Density Reticular AF
For still photographers, Canon has included its new 61-point High Density Reticular AF System, originally introduced with the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X professional camera. A significant advancement over previous 5D-series AF systems, the new 61-Point High Density Reticular AF included in the EOS 5D Mark III is the most sophisticated SLR AF system Canon has ever released. All 61 points are manually selectable and sensitive to horizontal contrast with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The camera’s twenty one focusing points in the central area are also standard precision cross-type and effective with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The center five points are ultra-high-precision diagonal cross-type points for maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/2.8. The 20 outer focusing points function as high-precision cross-type points with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/4.0. Other innovations of the new 61-point High Density Reticular AF include expanded AF coverage area, superior focusing precision and low-light sensitivity to EV -2, and greater low-contrast subject detection capability compared to earlier EOS AF systems. (See image below for AF point configuration)

All AF functions now have their own menu tab for quick and easy access (formerly AF custom functions in previous EOS models). A new AF Configuration Tool allows for customized setting of tracking sensitivity, the acceleration and deceleration of tracking subjects, and AF point auto switching, all of which are easily accessed and adjusted via the new AF menu tab. A built-in Feature Guide advises photographers on which settings to use according to subject matter.
The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same high-performance AI Servo III AF tracking algorithm as the flagship EOS-1D X professional DSLR. This new feature works together with the 61-point High Density Reticular AF system to provide superb tracking performance that blends very well with the new camera’s 6 frames-per-second high-speed continuous shooting capabilities.

Similar to the AF point selection options offered in the EOS 7D and EOS-1D X camera models, the EOS 5D Mark III offers six AF point selection modes: Spot, Single Point, Single Point with surrounding four points, Single Point with surrounding eight points, Zone selection and Automatic AF point selection.

6FPS is pretty good, I don't need blazing fast shooting, it is helpful, but I don't need it. With good timing 6FPS is more than enough. If the AF is as good as it is suppose to be, this is gonna be a pretty damn good action camera.
