Hi. I'm thinking about asking my parents for a digital camera for Christmas this year. I have for the past two years, but the two I've gotten in the past have both turned out to be crappy. The first one was just some Concord from a local drug store  The second (and current one) is a FujiFilm FinePix S3000 Z. I thought it was a good choice, but it wasn't. It's horrible.

Anyway, I've heard really good things about the Canon PowerShot A-series cameras. I'm thinking about asking my parents for the A610. Do you think it'd be a good choice for a beginner like me? Or do you suggest something else? I intend to use it just for personal stuff like pictures of me, friends, family, holiday stuff, and I'll probably be taking it with me to college next Fall. Please give me your advice and anything else you'd like to add. Thank you!

Come on! There are like 800 members browsing these forums. Some of you have used or owned the A610. I need input!

I bought an A620, the same as the 610 except more megapixels, and I love the thing. It's a pretty sturdy camera with alot of features and takes great pics. I think you would be very satisfied with the 610. I would also invest in two sets of four AA rechargable batteries, it doesn't eat batteries alive, but having a backup set is a very nice thing.

I have some rechargeables for my current camera. I got them in the 15-minute Energizer recharger. I love them.

And thank you for your input! :-) I've found a place online where I can get the A610, a 512MB memory card, a carrying case, and a cleaning kit for the same price I could get just the A610 at like, Best Buy or something. SO, needless to say, I'll probably get it from that website.
