View Full Version : Now for the real question?

Now that this 5D business is out of the way we can get to the real question... when can we expect the 7d replacement? This is the camera I am interested in as i'm sure a lot of others are. Let's face it $3500 is out of most casual photog's range but the 8d? will be in just the right spot. Unless they come out at $2500 ugh.
So let the speculation begin. If I had to guess... around 20mp,10 fps, iso to 25,600, dual card slot, and 61 pt af. This could fit nicely as the sports camera in their lineup after the phase out of the mark 4.

You will only get speculation answers from everyone until NDA's get lifted.
As for the 7D replacement, I would say next year. This year is already expensive enough in terms of new gear from Canon, Nikon, and even Fuji.
But shortly after the C300 and 1Dx there was an announcement mentioning another announcement. Correct me if I am wrong, but there was announcement of a 4K Video EOS DSLR from Canon.

i don't think anyone posting here knows the answer to your question.
however, in looking at the 5d3 grip, i don't think i saw that joystick like on the one of the reported canon employee was using in Africa. maybe that's a 7d replacement?

Keeping the 7D line going makes perfect sense. It's Canon's APS-C body, and has the EF-S range of lenses to support it, and is perfectly suited to photographers on a budget, and/or like the reach of the crop. It also fills a niche in pricing from the 5D3 to the 60D obviously, with robust performance. My mates love their's, and I can't seeing them paying the extra mile up to a FF 5D3

You can't replace a $1700 camera with a $3500 one and retain any customers. The pressure for high end and high performing APS-C cameras is just heating up with the A77, K-5 and D7000. No way can would drop out.

Excellent point. I had the big rigs when they were still priced high. What I'm looking for us what the OP was asking for. I will boast of how well the d7000 performs and the IQ is what will make me choose the dark side but thats just me

Why not? They replaced a 1300 dollar lens with 2200 dollar lens. Canon is money hungry

Nikon's 24-70 is $1900 street, so they can get away with it. If both Nikon and Canon are priced about the same there is no incentive to switch.
There are plenty of good alternatives to the 7D from Pentax, Sony, Nikon , so the incentive to switch would be great if the 7D was gone.
I find it hard to fault "money hunger". We are all greedy. I want the highest salary I can command and Canon wants the highest price they can get away with. That's just how we all are. Nobody is going to take less than they can get.

The camera you want might end up being the 70D. With the 5D and 7D lines merged feature wise into the 5D3, it leaves open the possibility of having the XXD line resume its spot as the middle ground between the XD and rebel lines...

The 7D doesn't really feel outdated to me. What would you improve on it really?

The soft OOC files and the quirky AF system?

Weaker AA filter would be nice yeah. What's so quirky about the AF?

I agree with the earlier comments that the 5Diii is both the 7D and 5Dii replacement. I also agree that the 70D will become the new high end crop camera because the 7D does not really have much room to improve. In the end, a 70D with a 61pt AF sensor is so much more of a leap from a 60D than it is from a 7D. In the end canon is just playing with numbers

I would like to see an investigation into canon, nikon and other big players for price fixing. Just like few years ago into lcd and memory companies. Were couple companies were found guilty of price fixing had to lower prices and pay big fines. Photo industry does the same.

Weaken the AA filter. A lot. That is all it needs.
Perhaps an AF tune up, as someone else mentioned...

Have you not observed a trend for prices falling over time with photographic equipment? The 1Ds3 was released at eight grand and I got mine brand new for half that. Of course companies are going to get as much as they can for their latest products, and will always have customers willing to pay whatever it costs for the latest product; most people will just wait and step in when the price starts to come down. The lens who's cost you were previously moaning about will get more affordable over time, just be patient. At the end of day, I doubt any of us really need it. It's just another 'luxury,' excuse the pun

- ISO improvements / Noise improvements
- Digic 5
- Better AA Filter as pointed out earlier
- Video improvements
- Maybe ~22MP from the marketing department
- Many more Focus Points
- Slightly smaller compact size
- Dual Card Slots / Wi Fi
A lot are gimmicks but there is definitely room for improvement. The 5D3 is great, but I'm sure Canon already have a roadmap and ideas for the 5D4 as well. Canon will die horribly against the 4/3rds or Nikon if they can't improve on their crops.
That's my opinion anyway. :D

If thats the next 7D then whats the next 60D? Its a huge improvement for the xxD line and will make canon seem much better at what they do. The 7D can die off as a merger into the 5Diii. Thats just my opinion but what will remain for the 60D then?

60D is arguably in itself basically a capped 7D. Which is not a bad thing, it's just in a different price category.
I would find it incredibly odd and short-sighted from Canon to release a new line (the 7D series), then scrap it after a one generation to merge it with a high end full frame camera. It doesn't make sense to me - that's all. I'm sure there is a long term plan for all three tiers of systems to coexist.

There are currently 4 tiers, 1 series, 5 series, 7D, XXD, and XXXD (rebels).

Supposedly the 7D and 5D share the same tier (semi pro), but I could go either way.

Long as they don't take away the folding screen, doesn't matter what number they stick on it. ^_^

I on the other hand hope they never make another model with a folding screen.
