View Full Version : POTN December 2005 Spend-a-thon
Carzee
24th of November 2005 (Thu), 22:30
Okay - here we go - let's beat the July Spend-a-thon of US$116,000 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=84295)
The total will run to the end of 26th December. I can imagine some lucky people may be surprised by what they find under the tree or whatever.... and then only find time the next day to post the news on this thread. Also some people get "gift certificates" and such toward their hobby.
What can we do? US$150,000?
Sky's the limit for a new total of POTN member retail therapy in the next 30 days??
Here's the fine print from the July thread:
Pls wander over to this thread during this month every time you spend money on photography gear.
Thats globally. All brands, A to Z.
Please post your spending in USD to make it easy.
How much are we spending in July 2005? Bored minds want to know. This'll be a summer survey... and then -by way of contrast- maybe we'll have a December 'Santa' survey!
There's no need to mention much except the total $$ involved and the date I guess. Keep the nitty gritty to yourself if you want... give a ballpark figure to the nearest $25 or so - do we spend $50k a month here? $75k?
[ running daily total will exclude bulk purchases for colleges, advertizing houses, news teams etc... but you can still showoff here! I'm looking for a rough total of personal use gear purchases of POTN members all around the world ]

Does a graphics tablet count as photo gear? I need one badly and it is on my Christmas list I gave to DH. I imagine I'll get it and not the new lens on the list.

Been off line at my first local POTN meet. Counting purchases starting Nov 25 - Dec 26... don't worry about your pre-26Nov spending.... even without it we will amaze ourselves with the total.
PC gear.
This was a fine line in the July Spend-a-thon. We counted portable storage... and I now consider purchases of PCs and Macs set up for PP - these buys should be counted IMHO.
When I've caught some shut-eye I'll post a first figure.
Keep buying.... YKYWT! (You know you want to!)

DVD Burner, wifi, and bluetooth are a "must" for me when I'm mobile.
$4900 for the laptop, dock, external mouse, and keyboard.

not really as I can have canon put in a new shutter for less than $400 down the road and the fact that it was recently given a clean bill of health by CPS.

Sigh...
Last week I discovered 4x DVD-R's are no longer made and my drive can't use 8x or 16x discs. Then, a few days ago I bumped my 160Gb external drive a little too hard and killed it. So, today I picked up a new 160Gb drive, a 16x dual-layer DVD+/-RW burner and 100 16X (single layer) discs. That's another $411 for me

The net is gonna fill up with niche end-user forums, naturally the relatively complex products have been the first to fire up. Should Canon have seen the opportunity and set up and run a forum earlier? Should they set up and run a EOS forum now? Should just participate and support an existing one? That would be interesting, having a member called "Canon Support"...
Question -What would the Canon Corp Lawyer say about the exposure to legal scrutiny and goodwill everytime "Support" made a post to a topic?
Answer -I would think the lawyers would be REAL nervous about forum participation; truths can be ummm, challenging to "manage in the interests of shareholders". Every post "Support" made would have to have a link to a disclaimer document....

Hmm.
So far this month I have spent:
300D+Sigma 18-50 F3.5-5.6 = £350
Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 1:2macro = £100
Bag: £40
Lense blower thingy = £5
so thats £495. About the retail price of a 350D body only kit then :)
Converted to USD via XE.com
US $ 868-ish - depending on currency fluctuations naturally.
Exact figure is $868.825, or $868.83 if you want to round it up.
Hmm, and I gave myself a budget of £450. Oh well, no beer for me this week then :)
