Just a quick rant about stuff i was thinking about on the drive home so some of it might not make sense to you. Feel free to chime in.

I dont understand people, mostly people born in the past 30 years, people who I believe are brainwashed by mtv and media, watching jersery shore, so into the whole vampire/werewolf craze and whatever the lastest fad is out there. Also why do the celebrities get paid so much? Why do people look up to them so much? I remember a friend once said while she was mesmerized, Chris Brown dances so well while watching a clip of him on a commercial, really who the fudge cares that he dances so well, watching him dance so well wont do anything to benefit you... What do they actually do? They don't fix grow crops, they don't build houses, they don't invent anything useful. I think these people who are entertainers and those who wants to make it into show business are useless to society and are looking for the easy way out, they dont want to make an honest days wage. I will take a leap and say that I am sure most of the celebrities don't have an actually education that matters (arts degrees dont count!) or any experience actually doing something that benefits society. I'll admit I like to watch movies from time to time but I dont think that we should be paying them anymore than an engineer who builds bridges that everyone can benefit from. Or a doctor who saves lives. Or the farmer who grows the crops and tends to the animals we eat every day. We should be paying them according to the amount of work they actually do. I think if we continue to pay them more and more each time, not only will this world become dumber and dumber, there will be no farmers, doctors, engineers left cause all the kids will grow up wanting to become a celebrity.

On another note, I told some friends that i bought my first rifle. They all asked the same question, why do i need it? I told them for protection. They all responded that if I needed protection, to call the cops............ thats what they would do if they were in that situation. Now i know some people are that are cops and I have a true respect for anyone in the law enforcement field, but we all know, when something is up, there is no LEOs around. My way of thinking is, if everyone had a right to own a gun, why not? Lets take a situation of a stalker following a female down a dark street. A gun would make anyone feel empowered. But what if that gun was in the hands of the stalker? then he would feel empowered and he would be in a position of power. But what if he knew that she and everyone else also had a gun? then he would not feel so powerful and would think twice about doing any harm to anybody.

This is just my midnight rant after a long day. Just some stuff I was thinking of when driving home. Some of it might not make sense to you but it does to me. Feel free to chime in about what you feel.

Let me make this simple for you.

There are 300,000,000 people in the US.

Let's say that 5% watch a movie and spend $12 on the trip. That's $180,000,000.

Let's say the lead actor gets a 10% cut. That's $18,000,000.

Do you think doctors can charge even a fraction of that amount to any one individual they see? What if they see 4,000 patient visits per year (general private practice high end average) then they would have to bill an average of $4,500 per visit to reach that amount - and that's prior to expenses and paying staff, etc. Would you like to pay that much next time you see your doctor?

I'm with you with the gun thing. Always remember that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Wow!
As midnight rants go, yours is a doozie!

I've got to go and teach in a minute, but put simply, the entertainment industry is just that.

It's an industry with the sole aim of entertaining us.....at a price.

Yes. It's a concern that young people are seeing it as a more viable option than a "normal" career.....but few make it. And re-training can re-initiate those people into "proper" jobs.

As to guns.....I live in Japan - been here 8 years now. And I'm originally British. We don't have guns in the UK. We don't have guns in Japan.
Look up the number of gun-related deaths in the USA, and then compare it to that in Japan.

I know it's written into the constitution......but that doesn't, IMHO, make it a good to carry firearms in today's volatile society.

Gotta dash!

Regards,

Simon

Well, I AM a cranky elderly man, at least 40 years older than the OP, and I'm also a moderator who feels obliged to remind everyone that this sort of conversation can get political in a hurry if you're not careful. If that happens, we'll have to shut it down.

I know, it's like walking on eggs, but rules is rules.

I'm probably a lot older than you (I've got a medicare card), and my advice would follow Tony - don't waste your time thinking about these things. Remember this, change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.
Be positive.

Or a doctor who saves lives

Iotragenic (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/iatrogenic).

Unfortunately, quite a common occurrence.

Damn... As much as I want to unload on these topics, mostly in agreement with the OP, Belmondo is right. Theres just nothing for it as you will NEVER get all the people to understand nor even be on the same page. So, alas, I must walk away feeling unfulfilled.

I'm not going to offer my opinion on gun ownership either way, but I do wonder how effective a RIFLE will be at self-defense. This isn't exactly "Quigley Down Under" in NYC.

. . . most of the celebrities don't have an actually education that matters (arts degrees dont count!) or any experience actually doing something that benefits society . . .

I wasn't born within the last 30 years (almost twice that), and most of my education has been technical (science, math, engineering, etc). In the interviening years, I have come to appreciate that because there are so many differences in folks, that differences in educational fields are appropriate. Nothing wrong with arts degrees for those who fit in. I think that the marketplace should determine the value of what any one person's contribution brings to us all. If an artist is truly bad, then he starves (figuratively), and finds other work. If an artist is really great, then we are willing to pay him for his tallent that he sells. What bothers me is when someone comes along and tries to "balance the scale" by interviening in the marketplace. When a starving artist (because of his poor work) suddenly gets a couple hundred thousand dollers for one of his works, simply because a grant writer is able to sweet-talk some bureaucrat into funding said artist, then we have lost the value of success and failure based on the product we produce.

Mod - I hope I didn't swerve into politics, I tried to keep it neutral . . .

I think what the OP is getting at is that the lead actor should not be making that much .... not that doctors need to be making as much as actors. I do believe a doctor should however make more then someone who plays a doctor in a movie :D

I do enjoy seeing movies (Hunger Games tonight ... which started out as amazing books, very proud to say read the entire series long before talks of a movie came out) however with the way prices are, I no longer take the family like I used to, now its maybe a movie every 4 months. Since when should taking a family of 4 to a movie cost $100. The reason it cost so much is due to all the actors taking huge cuts, and everyone else up the ladder. Same goes for concert tickets, and professional sporting events (I have not been to a Blazer game in over 4 years, just cant afford it).

As for guns I for one am very glad that I have the right to own as many as I want :D
