... and I found this pretty guy posing for me.

I'm finding the background really distracting though - I've blurred it a bit, but am still not happy with it.

I'm ok-ish on PSP7, but have hardly used Photoshop - what would you recommend I do to the pic now? (if anything - I could always try to lure him over again for a re-shoot)

The back ground is a little distracting but not that bad. Personally I'd fill the whole area with grass then blur.

There are several thjings 'wrong' with this picture:
- the color of the grass is conflicting with the color in the feathers
- the blurring is too close to the body of the bird
- the white on the tail is too bright.

Can it be 'fixed'? Gave it a few minutes and came up with this:
- selet white in tail and use levels to adjust the white
- copied layer, extracted the part right of the bird
- reduced saturation a little (-30) in second layer
- flattened the image
- sharpened

Thanks Conk and Henkbos!

Filling in the background to a solid grass I can manage, but I'm going to have to learn a bit more Photoshop before I can manage to copy how Henkbos fixed my picture!
