View Full Version : When will the 30D be out?

If you wish to throw an insult at me, keep it private. Of course it seems that moderators seem to throw a blind eye to insultiing posts from regulars, when they're directed at "newbies". I'm liking these forums far less than a few days ago.
Dave
No insult meant Dave. I was just pointing out that if it is unethical for manufacturers to maximize profits it is also unethical for a wage earner to want more than minimum wage. I beleive most of us have no ethical problems about taking the highest paying job, as long as it didn't require us to do anything unethical. There are even some who would be willing to do unethical things if the price was high enough.

I have no clue to what is Canon's hostory. I'm a little too new to canon, But Nikons history of producing new casmers put me to sleep ;). Look at the difference between the Mark II and Mark 1. Theres more MP etc.
Yeah history lessons put me to sleep too..
It has to be a trade off between whwat canon COULD do and what they MUST do
i.e. they probably COULD put a 12MP sensor in the 30D (and tweek the rest) but they don't HAVE to because the nikons competition is a 10MP so they only have to better it by a littele to stay ahead of the field, this leaves them a few cards up their technological sleeve to play if the competition comes out with any surprises

Where on earth did that come from?
Duly noted. :)
And to get back on topic:
It won't be a 30D, it'll be a 50D or a 25D or something like that.
1.6X 10-11 mpx DSLR
5+ frames/second
All the 5D's improvements including the more advanced AF system, larger LCD, picture styles, spot metering, etc.
List at $1400-1500 US.
I think you are right on with the "mystery" camera specs...they have to do everything in your list or they won't have a competitive product. I think they will also incorporate the larger LCD also, and <IMHO> the price will be pushing $1500 and maybe even $1599.

I believe "Ken" is a bit paranoid. If his interpretation is true, 2/3 of DPReview's posters will end up in court. :)

Yes, back on topic. I'm really hoping that it'll be a full frame sensor variant of the 20D. I guess I can hope :-) If not, I'd settle for improved AF (as good as the eos1n!!!) and an improved buffer, and spot metering and a larger LCD screen. And a cheaper price!
Gee, I don't want much do I hee hee!

And thanks to the US's current president any insulting posts made under a false name are illegal. Your typical forum flame war seems to be pleasantly absent from here. But if one does start we can get any US posters using dumb pseudonyms like "Citizensmith" arrested and trying not to drop the soap while they serve time. :)
So just for the record, my name is Marcus and I think all y'all are really nice folks.
Hi Marcus My name is Bubba and I'm in the cell next to yours. By the way don't worry about the soap just touch your toes.

I really don't see the 20D going to FF. Then the EF-S series lenses will only work on 1 model in the lineup. It WON'T happen. The advantages to the crop sensor allow most amatuer to semi-pro get away with using less expensive lenses to get a similar picture of a FF camera. I don't see FF taking over.

I agree, I reckon it'll be called the 50D. 30D is simply too confusing with the D30. Or, it could be called the 200D. That's quite viable, especially if it's just an improved 20D.
I like your suggestions for improvements, they make very good sense. Slightly Off topic, what is the minimum f ratio that the 20D stops autofocusing at? Using my 300mm f4, with the 2x convertor and the 1.6x crop would give me a focal length of 960mm, perfect for wildlife/birds. That would make my lens a f8, would the AF still focus (I presume not). If it didn't, it would mean upgrading to the 300mm f2.8, a rather expensive upgrade...
Dave
edited: I couldn't see the minimum f ratio for AF at the dpreview.com review on a quickish glance...

FF? I doubt that. And I never believe they do that. But with the mentioned changes I'll be tempeted to switch my "old" 20D ... ;)

The one thing which is sorely lacking in the 20D, as far as I can tell (as I don't own one, nor have I even held one!), is spot metering.
I really don't understand why Canon think only pros would need it - almost every other DSLR manufacturer includes it on every model, only us Canon suckers don't get it!
P.s. sorry if you had a bumpy introduction to the forums dave (dpastern) - they're generally a friendly enough bunch here (in the same way that The Odd Couple were also friendly ;))

Firstly, thanks everyone for the entertaining and educational thread about free market economics. Canon sell their stuff for profit eh? I'd never have guessed, but you learn something new every day. We could try Communism next if you like?
When the replacement finally does surface, we should award a prize to the poster with the nearest tech spec. Or perhaps there isn't going to be a replacement. Maybe the 20D is Canon's ultimate prosumer camera and will never be replaced ever (or at least not in the next 6 months)

nah it's ok goatee, I'm pretty thick skinned (others would say I'm thick, but not skinned!). I love my Canon gear and I'm just frustrated at the current state of Canon digital SLR - I really think it would be in Canon's interests to start dropping the price on full frame sensored SLRs...
I'm keen to see what the 20D replacement is, because if it's nice, and not too much up (in price) from the 20D, I'll skip the 20D and buy the new model. I should be able to afford it new in 6-8 weeks...of course, the new model won't be available immediately anyways...
I asked a local camera store guy tonight if he'd heard any rumours, he was playing it pretty close to the chest. I let rip with a few of the rumours that I've heard here on these forums, and carefully watched his reaction, and he didn't blink, kept a poker face. The 20Ds are all on special from what I can see in Australia, so that tells me something's in the air, and the camera stores know about it.

It's just supply and demand. Canon have the supply, we give them the demand. The price pops out all by itself. If Canon increase the supply and we demand more, the price will drop accordingly. If another company can do better for less money, that will help too (by affecting our demand)

12th of January 2006 (Thu), 04:16
lol - I see Dave's point - by dropping the price, it becomes much more of a mainstream / higher volume product, which will bring more normal consumers to a full frame body - as it is, helping to maintain Canon's vice like grip on the market ;)

The real question I think is whether they can pull the cat out of the bag and give 20D owners a reason to upgrade, otherwise it's just to keep one ahead of Nikon for new purchasers;)
Canon don't have 20D owners anywhere in their sights. The replacement will have only incremental improvements (as has been the case with predecessors), to keep abreast/ahead of the opposition, to attract newcomers, to attract 60/10/300 owners, but not to alienate existing 20D owners.
Those suggesting it will be FF just don't grasp Canon's product lines and strategy
And a third certainty: it won't be called the 30D, since the D30 is barely cold in its grave.

Well - interesting you mention sex, but it's no coincidence that the Adult Entertainment Expo is on at the same time as CES - like it or hate it, porn really drives technology - one of the main reasons that the inferior VHS became the standard rather than Betamax.
Anyway, I digress - I wonder what features Canon could add to the 20D to make it more appealing to the porn industry?

you have no way of knowing whtether that's true until they actually produce something
The 20D was aimed at 10D owners.. because a lot of them did actually upgrade

How long does it usually take to get any test on a new product after it is announced? I guess an independent source has to get their hands on one first. Does B & H usually start out at recomended list Canon price on a new release or give a price break?
