what would you guys think. i have had s50 for like 3 weeks and damm bestbuy wount return it but i am going to talk to the manager about it tommorrow. my dissapointment is the night shots. so i am asking what is a better camera? s50 or g3? well i am kinda lost in this and kinda step in to the s$$$ without thinking straight first.

Technically (on the inside) both camera's are identical, with the same chips etc. The only differences between the two are the lens (the G3 has a slightly bigger zoom and is a bit 'faster' when use in telezoom setting) and the fact that the S50 is a 5 MP and the G3 a 4 MP camera. So don't expect better night shots. By the way; the night shots I've taken in Amsterdam with my S45 look great, so what's the problem with your pictures?

well i either have 2 things happen. if theirs a light above i get a spot in the middle. or the picture goes dark. if i use night shot mode the picture comes out good in brightness but it is blurry

Are you using a tripod?

If not, that might make the change.

There're even small portable mini-tripods (about the size of a larger pen) available that might help.

Your problem isn't the camera. The S50 is capable of taking outstanding night pictures. Read the manual carefully to learn about the different modes, metering, etc., and be sure to use a tripod on any exposures less than 1/60th of a second.

well guess ive picked it up already. one question on the zoom buttom i seem to hear the spring when i like zoom in and out?

anyone experience this?

edit: well ive had this camera for a couple of hours usage and my impressions aint their neither. what am i doing wrong? my night shots got even worse. the lights on street and on buildings are like streaking? i dont know anything anymore, need help. what is the differences in the 2? aiaif on the both. i was told so. ? what does that effect? ccd or cfa? this camera little to bulky and im thinking the s50 was my choice afterall. but i need info as i probably am stuck not getting the s50 back but if need be i probably could but need to be like 100% on it though.

When doing night shots you need a tripod or a stationary object to put your camera on. Reason being is that when taking night shots your camera needs more light to properly expose the area you are taking the picture. In order to get more light into the lens the 'eye' opens up for a longer period of time. I believe the S50 is capable of up to 10 seconds. Yes, that's a 10 second picture. During those 10 seconds the 'eye' is wide open, so any movement on the camera itself will produce blurs.

And don't think that you can just hold your camera steady. More often than not the picture will come out blurry. The best thing you can do is steady your breathing and hold the camera to your chest to avoid any movement. The best shots however are from a tripod.

If I were you I would stick with the S50. It is essentially a shrunken version of a G3, minus some key features. And get a tripod for night shots.
