I enjoy live music photography and get by with my trusted Canon 50mm 1.8. I was thinking about buying a 50mm 1.4. Any other suggestions?

I guess it depends on how close/far away from the stage you are.
I highly recommend the 85mm f/1.8 as it is an excellent performer in low light conditions and very very good wide open and awsome stopped down a little. It also has lightning fast autofocus as well.

So are you saying at wide open aperture the 50mm f/1.4 does not perform as good as wide open aperture 85mm f/1.8?

i use my 50MM for live stage photography and it works great, i could post some examples later if you'd like
