i hear about noise in threads alot. by means of upin the iso you can induce noise. well what noise and is it something that affect film or just a erritating thing in hearing the camera do its thing?

Noise and ISO levels are both film related "things" that have carried over to digital as well.
Noise just refers to the "grainy" look that can appear in a picture for any number of reasons.
ISO level corresponds to a films sensitivity to light and color. (color? now I'm speeking of things I really don't know a lot about :( )
The Higher an ISO level that a film had,. the better the film would be able to function in lower light. So a photo that may have been to dark to be of any use in an ISO 100 film,. could be a perfect shot with ISO 800 film.
The Side effect is that this enhanced sensitivity to light gathering can contribute to "grain" or "Noise" in an image as the individual spots of emulsion on film may react somewaht deferently to the enhanced sensitivity to light. In digital the same phenomenon can occur with individual pixels on the CCD/CMOS behaving/reacting differently to the increased sensitivity. But it is a compromise like all things.
In newer digital cameras,. particular the 10D the light gathering or ISO sensitivity is phenominal,. and with the use of better CMOS sensors and better software in the camera,.. the "Graininess" or noise has been dramatically reduced over standard film.
