I was just notified that repairs to my in-warranty A85 will cost $108. Supposedly the camera shows signs of physical abuse, i.e. dropping, and they will not repair under warranty. My teenage daughter uses the camera and she says the lcd blanked out and the camera quit while she was holding it, not as the result of dropping it. I see the usual scratches but no indication of abuse. Has anyone else had problems with Canon shirking on the warranty based on claims of physical damage? I find it very annoying and it makes me think twice about that S80 I was going to purchase.

Very quick question. "A LCD blank out and the camera stops working"? Are you sure it stops working or just the LCD blank out by power saving feature?

The camera went completely dead. It would not power up again and the automatic lens cover was stuck in a half open position. Changing batteries or connecting to dc did nothing.

Don't know if this is applicable, however there have been many reports of Canon cameras "dropping dead" . Also many other threads on this site about Powershot G series with lens stuck out. Seems like you're talking about more than an LCD problem.

I've heard of a common issue with older A-series Powershot cameras "dropping dead" like that.. check to make sure the CF card door is securely closed. Oftentimes, either due to a malfunctioning switch or a loose door wll cause the camera to cease functioning altogether (After all, the CF card door is very flimsy and prone to failture...)
