i have a facination with the moon , always have had, and i have tried lots of times to get some photos of it but never very good , well last night i got some and here is the best one of the bunch.

handheld in back garden leaning against my shed.
using M mode :-)
iso 800 f 8.0 shutter at 120

lens sigma 70 - 300 apo

It's a little blown out, try lowering your ISO down to 200 or 400 with the same exposure time time. The moon is a very bright object that is deceptive to a lot of people. Overall, not a bad job for handheld, keep at it. When you try again with the tripod, try it at ISO 100, F11, for about 1/60th second as a starter and adjust your exposure as necessary. You will have to expose the phases accordingly, meaning that a full moon is extremely bright and would require a much shorter exposure than a waning or waxing gibbous.

thankyou for the tips , we have a full moon on the way on the 6th so i am hoping for a clear sky .

You're welcome. Personally, the full moon isn't as interesting of a subject as non full moons have shadows making the craters much more appealing, although that's just my opinion. I do try to shoot full moons when possible, however, my goal isn't so much the moon as it is to capture a plane in front of it - some day I'll get my shot!
