Using old lens on new camera

My son has a 35mm Canon Rebel SLR and wants to get the digital version. Will the lens on his old camera work on the new one? He's trying to save a little money.

Yes, all EF lenses will work on Canon digital SLR's too. By the way, what lens he got?

If it's a Canon lens, yes.
If it's a Sigma, maybe - depending on what lens it is. It may need rechipping.
If it's another brand, probably.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I hope you will find this a place to learn and have fun along the way.

All Canon-branded EF lenses will work on the Canon digital SLRs. If it is an off-brand like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, etc. there is no assurance it will work. Newer ones will, but many of the older ones won't.

Wow, I've heard you guys answer fast, but that's incredible! Thanks so much for the replies. I'm not sure exactly what lens he has, other than it is a Canon. It was a college graduation gift his wife got 4 years ago, so it is recent. I have the XT but don't live close enough for him to try his lens on my camera. I'll send him here for all the questions he's sure to have. I've learned a lot lurking here the past month and I'm sure he will, too.

I had 3 consumer zooms (canon)from my old A2 film camera that are over 10 years old and was happy to find that they worked on my 300d when I bought it a year ago.That 300d and those lenses found a happy home with my brother in houston.Now I think I have caught the L virus!!! Is there any cure?:p

Has anyone done this rechipping? I have a nice (for me) 70-300 Sigma APO zoom that I LOVED with my Rebel, but it won't work on my XT. Costs to upgrade?
