Well,

I hope some one can help me. I was out with the family today and took about 40 pictures (L jpg and S fine) of the family and surroundings at a local park. The day was overcast, I shot most of the pictures in the "P" mode ISO 50. When I got home I found that all the pictures were cast with a blue tinge. What caused this? I have had some beautiful shots come from this camerea and it was very dissapointed that most of these pictures were "blued". Could I be right when I guess that it would have been better to select the white ballance manualy?

You're right... you might want to check the white balance. I used to set it to, say, fluorescent, take some indoor shots and then forget it. The next day I'd pull the camera out in daylight and starting shooting with the same setting.

One of the advantages of using RAW mode is that even when you make a mistake in the white balance, you can correct it during the conversion.

Just a thought.

I agree that using RAW is the way to prevent this in the future, since the WB can always be reset after the fact. If you do RAW conversions the WB picker is the easiest way to custom set the WB. You simply pick on any non-colored pixel (white, black or gray).
To save your existing photos load them up into the PS 5.0LE that came with your camera. Use the Image, Adjust, Levels commands and then adjust the R,G and B channels separately to get a good color. One fiddles with the middle triangles (called gamma) to vary the mid tone color balance. Here is a short description, find the section on Levels:
