So this is indeed G5, well, for a first look it's a black G3 with 5 Mp. Still i wonder if Canon solve the bugs of G3, special the viewfinder obstruction; from the pictures i guess they did'nt mint about this verry annoing problem
Anyway black is cool, i like-it more that the silver g3.
Someone says there was no many new things from the g2 to g3. Well, it was i think the 4 mp constance that made you say that, how would you call that jump from g3 to g5, the cameras look the same, have the same optical zoom, everithing is the same except the extra megapixel wich is great but this is for me more "corporate bull****" or "why don't to buy another camera from us... it's black :)"
Don't get me wrong i'm not in love with g3, i will anytime admit a better camera but this g5 it's i think just dust in our eyes :)

It looks identical to the G3 w/ the exception of 5MP and a "Sports Mode." Notice the pics are using the G3 silver tubes...at least they could have spray painted them black.
My new G3 is coming this week but depending on how fast the G5 is released, I may just return my G3 and go for the black beast. I know I said I like the silver color better but I lied :) Everything you've learned on using the G3 will no doubt apply to the G5 since they are spitting images of each other.

I just bought my G3 about two weeks ago. Imagine my surprise when I read the G5 is announced.
I'm contemplating returning my G3, which I bought for $600 and get the G5. But an extra $200 for an extra 1 MP? I dunno... If it had better features, I would.

I'm not sure I'll do it either. I'm thinking I'll spend the money on a Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless putter instead :)

I don't think spending $900-$950 makes sense for just 1MP extra. Surprised they didn't add a bunch of more options. I can't imagine getting rid of a G3 to get a G5.
You can get a G3 for $550 with shipping included online...almost 1/2 of a G5 price.
Anyway, I think this will let G1/G2 owners save some good $$$ if they decide to upgrade to a G3 now. :-)

"The PowerShot G5 is a camera I feel Canon should have announced at Photokina last year instead of the G3, it's a essentially a black bodied, five megapixel version of that camera."

Does you know how quick the G5 will be available? ...especially online (its always cheaper). I almost purchased the G3 last week, but wanted to see what the G5 would have different than the G3. Did they fix the obstructed viewfinder? By the looks of it ...it doesn't appear so.

Someone was correct here, the CCD will overheat and noise will be significantly larger.

I like the black color more, the extra 1mp is nice, but I doubt I'd use the sport mode.
This seems like a good camera for a g1 user to upgrade to. g2 and g3 user's probably should wait for g6 or g7.

Well... I need to air out my feelings on this whole issue so pardon me if I get long winded or go off topic on some tangent.
Although I'm sure the G5 is going to be a great camera I'll just stick with the G3 thank you very much. The G3 is already a borderline "full sized" camera. It does much more than a photographer at my humble level of expertise actually needs. If I am going to spend over 900 bucks, and will be looking to make a drastic improvement in the quality of my photo's, I would be much better off investing in a DSLR with a couple of new lenses and some photo lessons at the local college.
No use letting buyer's remorse eat away at you. If you have buyer's remorse when it comes to technology, I hate to say you'll be suffering from permanent buyer's remorse : )
Think of it... in two years we will all be standing at the checkout line at some drugstore seeing the 10mp pocket cameras stocked on the shelf for less than 100$ thinking "man... I spent 600$ for my ..."

I don't think it actually has a sports mode....it doesnt mention it on the canon sites.
Also were those testbilder pictures from prototype or release cameras?

True...and interesting.
The S50 has that mode, so adding it to the G3 should be trivial, but the difference between what Phil shows on DP Review and what the Canon site shows is, well, interesting.
Be interesting to see who's correct, Canon, or Phil! :-)

from the canon site one more difference
Optical Viewfinder Real-image optical zoom viewfinder
LCD Monitor 1.8 inch low temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color LCD
LCD Pixels Approx. 118,000 pixels [521 (H) x 218 (V)]
LCD Coverage 100%
LCD pixels is more than that of G3
and LCD coverage is 100% when compared to G3's 97%

like one member mentioned, I did had a small buyers remorse, since I bought my G3 after plenty of readings, hesitations, and lot of decision making
I bought them just before memorial day weekend.
and I was little unhappy on hearing the release of G5.
since Bestbuy gave me 2 year no interest payment plan for g3 and all its acc, I thought it is a good deal since my monthly payment will be less than $50.
I thought if Bestbuy stocks G5 from June 2, then I have to pay 15% restocking fee (which is near $100) and on top of it the excess price of G5 + taxes,
I am looking at nearly min $250 to max $350 extra
I called up the bestbuy and spoke with their cust support, according to him they wont restock G5 til September,
after hearing that I decided to hold my wandering heart and commited it to the still young and sexy G3.
regards
;-)
